My name is Franzes, 30 years old from Germany, currently living in my chosen home city: Vienna.

These days I am not traveling as much, but rather looking for inspiring places to take a break from daily routines, reconnect with myself, and reflect on the bigger questions in life. I’m always open to meeting new people, exchanging ideas, and learning more about the world and myself.

I am a flexibel, open-minded person, welcoming work of different kinds. I love cooking, skilled in creative work and a background in business&economics. I am nature lover, active , and soon-to-be yoga teacher.

I was always a fan or workaway, as a I always had very fulfilling experienced, in which I learned a lot and made great memories. I was asked to only give a short feedback, but I feel obliged to share a more transparent account of my experience at this camp.

At first, I was very happy to arrive here. The camp is beautifully located in the forest… read more near the river, well-organised, and clean. Every workawayer is provided with their own tent and a mattress. The work briefing is clear, and the weekly schedule is shared in advance.

The work itself was as communicated beforehand: mainly cleaning toilets. The workload is not heavy—you just have to clean regularly. At times, though, it felt strange, as we were sometimes asked to clean toilets that had already been cleaned 15 minutes earlier. I am a very clean person, but the level of focus and discussion on how exactly to clean a toilet sometimes reached a point that felt rather exaggerated. Questioning the efficiency of the task or suggesting improvements was not welcomed; the expectation was simply to follow orders. Since it is a paid job (3 EUR/hour), perhaps even this could still be acceptable.

However, I noticed something that was more concerning. While everyone is polite, the hierarchies at this camp are very strict. As a workawayer, you are clearly in a lower position and are not supposed to question instructions. One incident particularly stood out: another workawayer came to me in tears after being told she had done a bad job—simply because she finished her shift at 22:30 as scheduled, instead of extending it until all guests had finished using the bathrooms. She was upset because her attempt to ask how she could improve was only met with anger. When she came to me and another workawayer for support, one of the managers noticed and suddenly interrupted. Instead of addressing the situation calmly, he accused her of “speaking behind his back” and confronted her in a very aggressive and mocking way (even mimicking her). Shocked by his behavior, I instinctively stepped in and asked him not to speak to her like that. The result was that the next day, he told me to leave the camp, explaining that “no one is allowed to interrupt him in that way.”

Luckily, I managed to find alternative accommodation the following day. Still, I feel it’s important to share this experience, as younger volunteers might feel very trapped in such a situation. I don’t think it is fair or necessary to treat volunteers this way—especially in what is otherwise a peaceful camp. Most workawayers are skilled, smart people who are eager to help and support, and they deserve to be treated with respect.

Other than that, I was paid as promised.
