I am a Artist and a Animal comunicator coming from Paris France and enjoying a total new life in the mountain of Costa Rica. We are a small farm in Monte de Oro, close from Puntarenas. we have a coffee plantation, a lot of animals. We are completely out of the tourist area, the village is at 20 mn by car but there is some typical small bar and restaurant around. Life is very peaceful here and the work is family style and every kind of talents are well come.

there is some nice river to go swimming and the first beach is 30 mn by car you have all kind of bus connection from the closest village Miramar or from Puntarenas. there is a canopy not far and always a lot of typical events in the village in summer time, with horses or toros...

We start the day around 7 with a big breakfast.... Miguel is my right arm, helping with the animals and the farm, very like to teach all his knowledge and share with foreigners. We need people who can speak a bit of Spanish, not afraid of hard and physical tasks. A lot of restoration of the wood house will help. Also, some help can be needed with my websites, graphic or publicity ....

You will stay in a nice but rustic, big studio separate from the house. The access of the kitchen is available, we are Vegetarian. Access of Internet and Wi-Fi are only in the main house, no internet in the studio. (we are in the mountain so some time it can quit).

We spent three weeks volunteering at Amania’s finca. The place is beautiful, Amania is a kind and interesting person, and we shared some good moments together. However, the experience turned out to be quite different from what we expected.

Amania has been hosting volunteers for about ten years, and it feels like what was once a pleasure has… read more become more of a necessity over time. This sometimes shows in a certain rigidity or authority in her interactions with volunteers, which can take away from the warm, collaborative spirit that volunteering is usually about. At times, we felt more like employees than volunteers. We also felt there was a lack of appreciation for the time and effort volunteers freely give to help.

The tasks themselves were not what we had anticipated. The coffee plantation is actually quite small, and we didn’t take part in it (not the right period). Most of our work consisted of painting her house and weeding the land. The horses are quite wild, so you won’t be able to ride them. The creative aspect of the volunteering is limited — we only took part in two workshop days during our stay.

As for the accommodation, the Casita is located at the top of the property. To go to the city you need to call a taxi, it cost around 15$ each time which is costly on the long run. The shower water is rarely hot, but the space is large and comfortable. You’ll also work two days a week with Miguel, who is very friendly and interesting — one of the highlights of our experience.

Nous avons passé trois semaines en volontariat chez Amania. La finca est magnifique, Amania est une personne intéressante et gentille, et nous avons partagé de bons moments toutes les trois. Cependant, l’expérience a été assez différente de ce à quoi nous nous attendions.

Amania accueille des volontaires depuis une dizaine d’années, et on sent que ce qui devait être au départ un plaisir est devenu avec le temps une nécessité. Cela se traduit parfois par une certaine rigidité ou autorité dans sa manière d’interagir avec les volontaires, ce qui peut atténuer l’aspect chaleureux et collaboratif que l’on recherche généralement dans ce type d’expérience. Il nous est arrivé de nous sentir davantage comme des employées que comme des volontaires. Nous avons également ressenti un manque de reconnaissance pour le temps et l’énergie que les volontaires offrent bénévolement.

Les missions réalisées étaient aussi différentes de ce que nous imaginions. La plantation de café est en réalité très petite, et nous n’y avons pas participé. La plupart des tâches ont consisté à peindre sa maison et à désherber le terrain. Les chevaux sont assez sauvages et ne peuvent pas être montés. L’aspect créatif du volontariat est limité : nous avons simplement participé à deux journées d’ateliers durant notre séjour.

Concernant le logement, la Casita est située en hauteur sur la propriété. L’eau de la douche n’est pas toujours chaude, mais l’endroit reste spacieux et confortable. Enfin, vous travaillerez deux jours par semaine avec Miguel, une personne très sympathique et passionnante, ce qui a été l’un des points forts de notre expérience.

It was a welcome change of pace to stay with Amania. In a literal sense. Her magnificent home is surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. I spent a month at Amania's and learnt lots - working with wood, caring for animals and painting. It was lovely getting to know and working with Amania, Miguel and Emilio. It is a beautiful place, where you can learn a lot. I loved being so deep in nature and meeting new people.

My first time workingaway couldn't be any better! I had such an amazing experiency at the finca helping to take care of the animals, plants and cleaning the finca.
