Hi, we’re Mario & Chris. We have been involved in permaculture and regenerative agriculture for several years, gaining experience in different countries and projects worldwide. After having volunteered ourselves many times we've now finally launched our own permaculture project in one of the most beautiful parts of Calabria, Italy.

Our place lies on a hill with spectacular views of the Ionian sea, the village of Badolato and the mountains in the back. It covers around 7ha of land, a third of which is natural forest and remains untouched, the rest are a dozen of fruit trees and various olive groves with several hundred trees..
Besides creating a livelihood for ourselves through the concepts of self sufficiency and food sovereignty, our main focus lies on soil regeneration and healing the land. In the coming years, we’ll be busy creating food forests, medicinal herb gardens, establishing polycultural crop management, optimizing water / energy management and actively boosting biodiversity. Our passion is to contribute to a healthy and thriving planet and to try to inspire other people / local farmers to do the same.
We have started creating a demonstration site and a soil lab where we can experiment and carry out biological soil assessments to check the soil food web. Our objective is to have healthy soils that help to have healthy plants and therefore healthy people ;)

We love simplicity, to connect with nature and others and we’re looking for like-minded people from all over the world to help us in building up the first permaculture centre / soil laboratory in Calabria.

You will get a chance to learn about permaculture ethics and systems in general, soil biology and regenerative practices in particular. If you stay long enough, you might enjoy an introductory lesson in soil analysis (with the microscope) and in producing high-quality compost, compost teas / extracts.

Beside work, we’re always happy to share ideas, knowledge and some laughs. If you like to move your body, you might enjoy our (irregular) ecstatic dance events or maybe a (acro-) yoga session on our (soon-to-be-built) yoga platform :)
Sometimes we feel like banging the drums around a fire or strumming a guitar while singing some Italian songs (and others, too). If you play an instrument, feel free to bring it along!
Last but not least, we have a growing library with books on various topics (i.e. Permaculture, community building, mycology, natural building techniques, etc.)

  • Ayuda

    Ayuda

We’re looking for self-responsible individuals who share our vision that healthy soils are the base of all life and who can assist us in various tasks, such as gardening (planting, weeding, tending, propagating, harvesting, pruning), implementing erosion control, earthworks (i.e. water retention systems, etc.), compost management, building small structures, fencing, cooking, baking, harvesting olives (seasonal), tending to the chickens and a lot of other fun stuff. If you have special knowledge or skills in a specific area, we might want to learn that from you, too :-)

We offer regular volunteering (minimum three weeks) year-round, and also either a 3 or 6 month stay for internships (hands-on learning experience) and for skilled / experienced workaway people who’d like to stay for longer.

We’re eating mostly vegetarian meals (sometimes vegan), but nothing strict or dogmatic. If you have special dietary restrictions, please let us know in advance.

We’d like to have a Skype call with every volunteer before they arrive so we can get to know each other and/or better assess your strengths to make it a pleasurable experience for everybody.

    Alojamiento

Depending on the time of year and the amount of volunteers, we’ll try to provide you with a room in the house (single / shared). During special occasions (like olive harvests / natural building workshops, etc.), we’ll open the campsite where you can pitch a tent in the shade of an olive tree.
The house is equipped with flush toilets and hot showers while the campsite has compost toilets and cold showers.

We believe that Calabria is one of the most underrated regions in Europe in terms of natural beauty, biodiversity and quality of life. It's a perfect place to discover unspoiled nature, connect with life and with yourself.

The beautiful town of Badolato (Superiore) is definitely worth a visit or two, not just for it’s incredibly good gelato or Pizza but also for it’s charming inhabitants and romantically narrow alleys. Also, there is a selection of small shops (including a little supermarket, a pharmacy, souvenir shops, bars, etc.) It can be reached by foot from our place in 20-30min. If you would like to check out the surrounding area on your own, public transport is working decently (local busses / regional trains). The beaches are close by (10 min. by car - 20 min. by bus / foot). We have endless forests in the mountains behind us, so there are plenty of hiking / biking trails to be found. We can also point you to some beautiful waterfalls that you might want to explore on the weekends.
