    Dearest Workawayers,

You are most welcome to our page!

We would love technical support and expertise on trainings for topics with our local school projects, women's groups, and youth groups.

Past volunteers have came from the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, Uganda, and the U.K. We even have a Peace Corps Volunteer from the United States with us now who helps in much of our work. Our donors have been extremely gracious over the past 20 years in helping to provide resources for us to enable action and trainings in our community, but we always embrace the idea of having "more hands on deck" to help pilot this organization toward englightening our local communities with continuous knowledge (a.k.a, power!)

You can work and stay with us for two weeks to three months, help make plans for trainings, and we will help transport you to and from the field, with assistance from our staff in translating and providing materials—we shall include three meals and two tea times, as well as a modern apartment hostel for your accommodation!

Please see below for what help we desire for this listing, our organization's activities, our belief on behavior change, and our future plans!

    |Help for School Projects, Women's Groups, and Youth Groups|

School Projects (Primary Rural and Secondary Rural Trainings)

We give many regular trainings on agriculture and planning school gardens within a one-hour radius drive of our community (as well as hosting select partners throughout ALL of Uganda with their gardens), but we also seek to teach about nutrition, reproductive health, gender roles, HIV/AIDs, WASH, entrepreneurship, school gardens, computer, and website designing. If you can assist us in any of these endeavors, we would love to couple you with one of our team members in our agriculture or health departments to assist you in facilitating lessons (and lesson planning) at our schools.

Women's Groups (Rural Business and Health Training)

We have had great successes with choosing the most-needy women's groups and flipping their small businesses into fledging micro-industry's. We assist 40 new women's groups a year, inviting them to many trainings, visiting them in the field, and conducting monitoring and evaluation. While entrepreneurship camps and business trainings have occurred and helped these ambitious ladies, we can always use more skills training, even if they are over previous topics, as well as health related trainings on topics aforementioned in the 'School Projects' description above.

Youth Groups (Rural Trainings on Business and Soft Skills)

Youth groups have become our bread and butter, recently, with a specific preference to training women. We excel at working with the youth outside of schools in their farmers groups and business groups. Many topics we could use extra assistance in would involve: gardening, agriculture, permaculture, organic gardening, value additions, savings and credit, water management, computer training, and reproductive health. If you have any lessons you may impart upon our youths to help them in any of these regards, we would be glad to host you, provide materials, transport, food, and translation support!

Let us work together and empower Masaka and the Central Region of Uganda!

    Oganisation's Activities:

Our organization works in a two-pronged approach toward engaging the community: outreach and extension programs, as well as localized facilitations at our training centres. We diligently cover topics in the field and on our grounds, including organic farming, climate change mitigation and adaptation, food security, reproductive health and nutrition, water and soil management, irrigation techniques, agro-forestry (tropical food forests), and animal husbandry. Most of these agricultural themes later tie into value addition training. Our site has quite hefty demonstration gardens and livestock examples, where we give tours and trainings on how to perform holistic approaches to agricultural management. Mainly, these localized trainings on our grounds target vulnerable widows, single mothers, and young girls, as of late (this does not exclude young boys, however). Lastly, we also have agricultural extension services, focusing on only the neediest applicants of women's groups, youth groups, and rural primary/secondary schools (garden and lesson constructions).

    Our Belief on Behavior Change:

"Feed the soil so that it feeds you" is our embraced lifestyle and principle work goal. We often impart upon our guests and participants, “Twenty-five percent of your time with us will be based in theoretical approaches. The remaining seventy-five percent is grounded in practical’s; a hands-on approach. When one uses all their senses, that is how they learn best.” Too often, our educational system leaves out those who do not score so highly on tests, although these students are bright and excel in an agricultural and entrepreneurial capacity – why is this a problem for our society? We believe change is needed, and our Projects’ practical preparations are the best for our alienated groups in Uganda. Our net is cast wide, but we have had raving success in tapping into the minds of our targeted populations. We believe in sharing skills to our friends to spread beneficial knowledge.

    Future Plans:

Uganda is blessed with many types of fruits, but by the time they reach international markets, the price is increased in such a manner that leaves out the small-holder farmer who prepared this for export. We want to teach youth in how they can profit from every point of the value addition chain, by initial point of harvest to final point of consumption. For example, we have a large fruit drying facility here, and we plan to show youth groups how to collectively bargain and form cooperatives so as to increase the value of a simple fruit for profitability. In tandem with this, another plan is to set up a practical permaculture centre, bringing local people, including schools and youth, to learn how to care for the environment more long-term. We shall also bring in campers to participate in entrepreneurship trainings, preferably primary and secondary students, during holidays, genders considered.

We are super-central Ugandan in our culture, practices, and cuisine :) We have many evenings playing drums, meeting with others in the urban centers and--mostly--surrounding villages, and we love to teach Luganda to those who work with us (the language spoken in central Uganda). Here, you will get to experience the truest form of East Africa. Many people from all over the world have come to our demonstration and training centers. They continuously visit and enjoy everything they learn, from practicals to demonstrations. We also have a Peace Corps Volunteer on site who has stayed for over one year who can help facilitate cultural knowledge of the area.

We have a wonderful hostel with tiled flooring, balconies, western toilets, showers, solar electricity, water heaters, and of course the customary mosquito nets as well as jerry cans (think big plastic water containers!) and basins. You will receive a key to your own room as well as an enclosed bathroom containing mentioned amenities, within.

We have a separate dining room just below the accommodations where breakfast, lunch, and dinner is served! The kitchen staff are awesome and super friendly, as is the hostel staff!

  • Algo más...

    Algo más...

Masaka has plenty of good mzungu restaurants and and exciting nightlife filled with clubs and bars for visiting. It is popular among volunteers on the weekends to take trips to Masaka (local town), Kampala (capital city--everything is there!), and Jinja (rafting, restaurants, tourist town). If you would be available four days out of the week for work, we would be most grateful! If ever extensions or adjustments are needed, or you just want to get away for a little while, pass it by us. We are entirely agreeable, and the lifestyle here allows great flexibility!

*️️️We cannot cover cellular expenses nor can we always give free transportation on your time off, but do not fear! Data is super cheap, and for rides to town, it never hurts to ask us or our neighbors for an available ride, and the main road to Masaka and the capital Kampala is only a kilometer walk, or two-minute car/motorcycle ride from our training and demonstration centers*️️️
