We are the largest dog shelter in Peru, home to over 100 rescued dogs. Established in 2021, it is primarily funded by its founders, Jessica (Peruvian) and Kishor (Bangladeshi). Kishor also oversees several international charitable initiatives (Google “Kishor Kumar Das Bidyanondo” for more information).

To help sustain the shelter, we operate a beautiful lodge—Samana—which generates income to cover the dogs’ food and care expenses. The project spans a large property with gardens, a river, and shared community spaces, and is also home to various other animals. Please don't expect this shelter in western standard.

All dogs are rabies-vaccinated. Most of our dogs have been rescued from the streets and may not be fully trained, Occasionally, you may observe playful or spirited behavior.

The most rewarding part of this project is undoubtedly the dogs — each one affectionate, unique, and full of character. You will miss them deeply after your time at the shelter.

It also brings together wonderful people from around the world, creating a diverse and supportive volunteer community. Typically, 8 to 15 volunteers help together at any given time.

The shelter itself is spacious and well-equipped, with a large common area designed for relaxation and connection. Volunteers often enjoy social activities such as weekly pizza nights and occasional pool gatherings, depending on group interest.

This is a physically demanding volunteer position. The main responsibilities include cleaning (which requires significant time), feeding, and spending quality time with the dogs. Volunteers with additional skills—such as photography, construction, or administration—are also highly valued and can contribute in meaningful ways.

Although the work can be tiring, the joy of seeing the dogs happy and thriving makes it deeply rewarding.

Each year, around 300–400 volunteers join us, so organisation and time management are essential. A positive, cooperative attitude is crucial. We welcome committed volunteers ready to make a difference.

Accommodation is located just two blocks from the dog shelter. Individual volunteers are provided with shared rooms, while couples receive private rooms. Please note that the facilities are basic and should not be compared with commercial hostels or big charity. A shared kitchen is available, and we provide essential food items such as rice, pasta, oil, oats, beans, and seasonal local vegetables. We kindly ask volunteers to join with the primary purpose of caring for animals, not for accommodation benefits.

There is a small self-service store within the hostel, and all proceeds go toward purchasing medicine for the dogs. We also voluntarily provide light snacks during the morning break and a cooked lunch; however, these should be seen as occasional benefits, not guaranteed provisions. Please treat the accommodation with care and understanding—it is part of a mission-driven project, not a commercial facility.

Volunteering requires a minimum commitment of 10 days, as the induction process is comprehensive. Extensions may be approved based on performance, attitude, and availability. Early departures are not permitted, as they disrupt shelter operations. Volunteers work five days per week, five hours per day, with schedules assigned in advance. If a shift is missed (e.g., due to illness), volunteers are responsible for covering that day’s accommodation cost. Alternatively, you may stay as a paid guest, with all proceeds directly supporting the dogs’ food and medical care.
