  Vegan family farm: 4 pigs, 2 dogs and 1,000 unfinished jobs
  
  Hello everyone,
  
  We live here as a family on our lovely farm, and we can always use a helping hand.
  
  Our household includes our two boys (9 and 14), two dogs, four cats and four pigs. Our pigs are rescues and are not for eating — we all live vegan, and we ask you to do the same while you're staying with us. Please also don't bring any non-vegan food, thank you :)
  
  We have 23,000 sqm of land, a colourful and chaotic garden, a pool, a trampoline, hammocks and plenty of space to roam. And, most recently, a self-built pizza oven.
  
  Accommodation
  
  Whoever comes to stay can sleep in the shepherd's hut (Bauwagen) or in our large guest room, which we usually offer to two or more people travelling together. If you're on your own, we have a small, cosy room just for you. Either way the room is yours — you'd only ever share with another Workawayer you're travelling with. There's of course space for a camper or van too.
  
  Hours
  
  4 hours/day, 5 days/week (20 hours a week in total, and we're flexible about how they're spread
  
  Food
  
  Meals are of course provided. It's always been very relaxed: food is freely available throughout the day, we cook once a day, and otherwise everyone helps themselves.
  
  A bit more about us
  
  Children are very welcome, and you're welcome to bring pets. We're easy-going people, we enjoy a good chat but we also work a lot. Politically we're left-wing — that matters to us. We're not very receptive to spiritual things, sorry :/ But we respect everyone.

  wir leben hier als Familie auf unserem schönen Hof und können helfende Hände immer gut gebrauchen.
  
  Zu uns gehören unsere beiden Jungs (9 und 14), zwei Hunde, vier Katzen und vier Schweine. Unsere Schweine sind gerettete Schweine und werden nicht gegessen – wir leben alle vegan, und wir bitten dich, das während deines Aufenthalts bei uns auch zu tun. Bring bitte auch nichts Unveganes mit, danke :)
  
  Wir haben 23.000 qm Grundstück, einen bunten und chaotischen Garten, einen Pool, ein Trampolin, Hängematten und jede Menge Platz zum Austoben. Und seit Neuestem einen selbstgebauten Pizzaofen.
  
  Unterkunft
  
  Wer zu uns kommt, kann im Bauwagen schlafen oder in unserem großen Gästezimmer, das wir meist an zwei oder mehr gemeinsam Reisende geben. Für Alleinreisende haben wir ein kleines, gemütliches Zimmer. In jedem Fall hast du das Zimmer für dich – geteilt wird höchstens mit einem anderen Workawayer, mit dem du zusammen anreist. Platz für Camper oder Van ist natürlich auch da.
  
  Zeiten
  
  4 Stunden am Tag, 5 Tage die Woche (insgesamt 20 Stunden, flexibel aufteilbar)
  
  Verpflegung
  
  Mahlzeiten gibt es natürlich. Bisher lief das immer ganz locker: Essen steht frei zur Verfügung, einmal am Tag wird gekocht, ansonsten bedient man sich selbst.
  
  Noch ein paar Worte zu uns
  
  Kinder sind herzlich willkommen, Tiere können mitgebracht werden. Wir sind entspannte Menschen, quatschen gerne, arbeiten aber auch viel. Politisch sind wir links – das ist uns wichtig. Für Spirituelles sind wir nicht besonders empfänglich, sorry :/ Wir respektieren aber jeden.

  You'll get an honest look at life on an old half-timbered farm in the Wendland, one of the quieter and more idiosyncratic corners of northern Germany. This is the region of Gorleben, where a salt dome was proposed as Germany's permanent nuclear waste repository – and where one of the country's longest-running protest movements grew up against it. The yellow X you'll see on barns and fences everywhere is the symbol of that resistance. It shaped this region and the people who live here, and you can still feel it.
  
  And beyond the work: long conversations at the table, evenings at the pizza oven, a chaotic garden, and time in a part of Germany most travellers never see.
  
  On the practical side, there's plenty here you won't come across elsewhere. We're slowly restoring our 120-year-old half-timbered house, and if traditional building methods interest you, there's a lot to see and learn – timber framing, clay plaster, and why old houses are built the way they are. Beyond that: building willow fences, planting a fruit tree meadow, and the small crafts that come with keeping an old house and garden alive. Old buildings teach you a lot, mostly patience.

  Du bekommst einen ehrlichen Einblick in das Leben auf einem alten Fachwerkhof im Wendland – einer der ruhigeren und eigenwilligeren Ecken Norddeutschlands. Hier liegt Gorleben, wo ein Salzstock als Endlager für hochradioaktiven Müll vorgesehen war und dagegen eine der längsten Protestbewegungen der Bundesrepublik entstanden ist. Das gelbe X, das du überall an Scheunen und Zäunen siehst, ist das Zeichen dieses Widerstands. Er hat die Region und die Menschen hier geprägt, und das spürt man bis heute.
  
  Und abseits der Arbeit: lange Gespräche am Tisch, Abende am Pizzaofen, ein chaotischer Garten und Zeit in einer Gegend, die die wenigsten Reisenden je zu sehen bekommen.
  
  Praktisch gibt es hier einiges, was man anderswo kaum mitbekommt. Wir sanieren nach und nach unser 120 Jahre altes Fachwerkhaus, und wer sich für traditionelle Bauweisen interessiert, kann dabei viel sehen und lernen – Fachwerk, Lehmputz und warum alte Häuser so gebaut sind, wie sie gebaut sind. Daneben: Weidenzäune bauen, eine Obstbaumwiese anlegen und all die kleinen Handgriffe, die dazugehören, wenn man ein altes Haus und einen großen Garten am Leben hält. Alte Häuser bringen einem vor allem eines bei: Geduld.

  Time off and getting around
  
  The Wendland is rural, in the best and the most inconvenient sense. Public transport exists but is sparse, so the easiest way to explore is by bike – and we have bikes you can borrow. The nearest train station is Lüneburg or Salzwedel; from there Hamburg is under an hour away and Berlin around three hours, so a long weekend in either city is very doable.
  
  Close by, the Elbe river valley is a UNESCO biosphere reserve – wide meadows, dykes, storks, cranes in autumn, and good swimming in summer. Hitzacker is a pretty little town right on the water. The Rundlinge, the circular villages typical of this area, are worth seeing and easy to reach by bike. If you're here in May, the Kulturelle Landpartie turns the whole region into an open-air art and music festival for ten days – it's the highlight of the year around here.
  
  And at home there's the pool, the trampoline, the hammocks and the pizza oven. Most of our helpers end up spending their days off right here, which we take as a good sign.

  Das Wendland ist ländlich, im besten wie im unpraktischsten Sinne. Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel gibt es, aber selten – am einfachsten erkundet man die Gegend mit dem Fahrrad, und Räder können wir stellen. Der nächste Bahnhof ist Lüneburg oder Salzwedel; von dort ist man in unter einer Stunde in Hamburg, Berlin ist rund drei Stunden entfernt – ein langes Wochenende in beiden Städten ist also gut machbar.
  
  Ganz in der Nähe liegt die Elbtalaue, ein UNESCO-Biosphärenreservat – weite Wiesen, Deiche, Störche, im Herbst die Kraniche und im Sommer gute Badestellen. Hitzacker ist ein hübsches Städtchen direkt am Wasser. Die Rundlinge, die für diese Gegend typischen Runddörfer, lohnen sich und sind mit dem Rad gut zu erreichen. Wer im Mai hier ist, erlebt die Kulturelle Landpartie – zehn Tage lang wird die ganze Region zum Kunst- und Musikfestival, das Highlight des Jahres hier.
  
  Und zu Hause gibt es Pool, Trampolin, Hängematten und den Pizzaofen. Die meisten unserer Helfer verbringen ihre freien Tage am Ende hier – was wir als gutes Zeichen nehmen.
