  • Description

Hello! My name is Tricia Gomez.

I am so happy to finally be a part of workaway. It has been a dream of mine since I was a teenager. I have decided to take a gap year after receiving my Bachelor's degree to travel the world and to learn about occupations that are not offered in my hometown.

I am from Albany, New York. It is the definition of a classic American suburb. I hope that doesn't scare anyone off:)> I also had the pleasure of living in Barcelona for a year and half, Geneva for a year, and Anglet, France for 6 months—all thanks to my studies abroad. During this time, I had the pleasure of meeting people from all over the world and discovering places I had dreamed about while living in Albany, New York. I was also able to reach a decent level in French & and a very basic level in Spanish. Learning French and Spanish is a big priority for me during my gap year and I am hoping experiences during my time traveling with workaway will help me accomplish this goal.

I am very passionate about youth development and would love to become more eco-conscious. I am hard-working, like to get my hands dirty with outdoor projects, and overall love to learn new things. I'm hoping this experience will open my eyes to things I never even knew existed and offer a new perspective that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I’m excited for this experience!

Off the top of my head, my favorite things are... being outside in rain or sunshine, sitting around a fire with a big group of people, sports that give me an adrenaline rush, early morning tea or coffee, swimming in any type of weather, family dinners.

More details about my language interests
My biggest goal within the next year is to improve my French and to start to learn Spanish again. I currently am involved in online language exchanges. My pen-pal and I do many activities to learn our desired language. Currently I am reading "l'étranger" and my pen-pal is reading "where the crawdad's sing." Each week we discuss what we have read in French and in English. I am more than happy to do activities like this during my workaway experiences!

  • More details about your skills

Let's see. I'll start with what I have been studying for the past 4 years. I will soon receive my Bachelor's degree in International Management and Finance. I learned the fundamentals of corporate finance and management along with many important skills. This includes computer skills, organizational skills, communication, presentation skills, etc. While studying in Geneva, I became very interested in the impact that NGO's in Europe are working to accomplish. I am an advocate of SDG's. To learn more about this sector I joined an internship working for the World Federation of United Nations Association as a Conference Marketing Intern. I also volunteered at a grant-funded grocery store, where I gained experience in grant writing, supply chain logistics, grassroots marketing strategies, and ways to bring the community together.

During the beginning of my studies I also interned at a five star hotel in Barcelona as a food and beverage intern. I learned a lot about the service industry in this role. I learned the proper etiquette to set a table, I know how to make a simple list of cocktails, I learned about the difference between a dry wine and sweet wine (along with many other traits of wine), I can cook, and learned tons of other ins and outs of the restaurant industry.

In Albany, I enjoy spring the most because it is finally time to clean up the yard outside. I love the occasional landscaping projects that my parents think of, and I love gardening! I can also paint, clean, assemble furniture, and have also dreamt of being an international interior designer. You have to start somewhere right?

I also have a dog that I absolutely adore. I love all animals and have spent time helping at my cousins farm with their pigs, horses, cats, and chickens. I have also helped them with projects like fixing the roof of their shed and a trailer for the back of their car.

Being a caregiver to children in New York, France, and Switzerland has also been a big part of my life. I adore working with kids and have been doing so since I was 16. I worked in an elementary school as an afterschool counselor for 3 years, and have babysat for 5 families (ages 1 month to 11 years old).
