I help people, learn things, spend time on the landscape, and play fiddle.
My next destination:
Ireland - from Apr 2025 until Jul 2025 View allDescription
I caretake a redwood forest reserve in California where I've been seven years, and I travel playing fiddle. I have handyman/building/gardening/homesteading skills. I left an engineering career to give my energy to things I love: tending nature and growing food, and music.
I don't smoke or use alcohol or any other substances. I'm quiet, responsible, thoughtful, hardworking, good with children, easy to be around, and can figure out how to do whatever needs doing. I am curious and love to learn about most everything. I have a good sense of humor and will respond well if you tell me I'm doing it wrong! ;)
I have camping gear with me and can sleep outside or on a floor comfortably. Also if it's easier for you I can provide my own food and trade some work hours for fiddle playing hours. ;)
I don't expect this everywhere - but what would make a stay extra perfect for me, would be to have use of a bicycle to get around to trad sessions, and to be able to return late from said sessions - if coming in the house at 1am would be a bother, I'd happily sleep outside on nights when I'm out late. :)
In addition to a couple reviews here, I have hosted wwoofers who have given me reviews:

My last review as a wwoofer myself is from Alisa at Sparkroot Farm in North Carolina:
"Philip was a joy to have around! He took care of what needed looking after without forethought and initiative. He was quiet and thoughtful and fun to be with. Interested in the world, and work and conscientious. He went above and beyond and our village was grateful to have his energy here. He is missed and welcome back anytime. Thank you Philip."Interests

More details about your skills
I worked as a software engineer at Google for five years, leading a team. Then I left to volunteer with a nonprofit and caretake a forest reserve and homestead where I helped build buildings, and have maintained the off grid infrastructure for seven years: electrical and water systems, pumps, generators, chainsaws, buildings, garden, road, etc. I do tree work and am trained as a firefighter.
I can cook from scratch with whatever is available, and keep a kitchen clean and organized.
I love to teach music and will gladly assist children or adults in learning any instrument, or give beginner lessons using my fiddle. I have a three year old nephew who I have spent many days minding, and I love teaching him everything.
I always think about the long term implications of what I do, how it will impact the land and people over the next years and decades.Age
