  • Description

My name is Gerard and I joined Workaway as part of my journey to learn more about the world and culture through unique and meaningful travel experiences. About a year ago, I left a life I always imagined I'd be happy in, but wasn't. My mind is incessantly curious, and I found myself craving a life with more passion and adventure than the one I felt tethered to. So, I left my place in that world in order to pursue a more free and nomadic one. I have and will continue to use Workaway as a tool to do this through knowledge and work exchange with people and projects everywhere.

I feel some of the recent experiences in hospitality and adventure guiding, combined with my work history in tech sales, customer success and regional management uniquely qualify me to assist in a wide array of projects.

Please see the skills and experience section of my profile to decide whether I would be a good candidate for your work exchange offer. Thank you!

  • More details about your skills

My skills are broad and random, due to my life experience, but I believe they allow me to adapt easily and provide value to a variety roles and environments.

I served in the United States Coast Guard for 4 years, where I lived and worked on a 378 foot cutter out of Hawaii and traveled throughout the Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea as a deckhand and Operations Specialist. Early on in my Coast Guard career, I contributed to a large portion of the manual labor needed to run and maintain a ship that houses and transports over 150 people (painting, cleaning, construction, security, engineering, line handling, stocking of goods, waste management, cooking, etc.). As I moved up in rank, I received various certifications and commendations, as well as additional project and team management responsibilities, which I carried out successfully. During my time in the Coast Guard, I accrued over 20,000 sea miles and visited 10 countries, 4 continents, and numerous islands. I am also International Bareboat Skipper and STCW qualified and up to date.

After my Coast Guard service, I worked jobs in security, sales, and customer service while obtaining a Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering, which I received in 2015. With that degree, I worked for 8 years in the surgical device industry as a sales person, clinical specialist, trainer and customer success manager at two of the biggest companies in the industry and one startup. These jobs allowed me to travel throughout the US and Canada while developing skills that led to consistently positive customer experiences and relationships with all levels of healthcare professionals.

Earlier this year, I left the medical device industry to co-found a web3 tech startup that provides a platform to help create a sustainable and equitable community of global explorers with aspirations for a better world. Through this platform, we own or lease a number of hostels and apartments in Europe and Mexico, tokenize them, and offer these tokens to community members as a way to invest, as well as provide online and in-person events for open communication and idea sharing. Our goal is to add productive assets in hospitality, energy and food to eventually develop our own eco-friendly, self sustaining communities all over the world.
