Description
We are a creative couple who love being on the move, making films, and discovering new horizons. We left Russia right after the war started, spent 2.5 years in the Holy land of the Middle East — in Jerusalem, rode across Israel multiple times on a motorcycle, camped in the desert, lived in a tent on the lowest spot on Earth — the Dead Sea. Eventually realized we needed a break from wars, so we set off on a new journey.

We are husband and wife. Tom – director of photography, cinematographer, Julia – ai creator, art director and immigration producer (aka master of logistics, paperwork, and survival in new countries).

We are looking for opportunities to put our creative expertise to work while combining it with our love for extreme sports: skate& snowboarding, hiking, camping, motocross (Tom), and badminton (Julia).

Our volunteering experience:
✅ 3-week stay at Latroun Monastery (Israel) — filmed a documentary; Julia redesigned the logo and created illustrations for postcards in the giftshop.
✅ Winter 2024: Georgian mountains — filmed and edited a commercial for a mountain guesthouse in exchange for three months of accommodation.
✅ First week in Vancouver: Canada — redesigned a rental studio’s web page and photographed the space in different lighting setups.

Left by host (Be part of our Star Wars ...) for Workawayer ()

I rate the overall experience of hosting Julia and Tom as pretty neutral. The process of task management at my place involves a posted task list that is discussed weekly. Workawayers are free to pick tasks and complete those that interest them. Part of the reason I welcomed these workwayers was for gardening and cleaning assistance as well as… read more assistance that may be provided involving their advertised specialty skills with video and creative. I am a search and rescue volunteer, local canyoning guide and private investigator. I was looking forward to putting thier shared skills to use to capture video footage, do some creative work including ideas to improve website and create content and some training projects to support local canyoning community and my business development projects around training. There seemed to be much promise initially. They spent significant time on creative project development. They gathered excellent quality footage from a canyoning day I requested them to support as videographers.

Due to injuries they each sustained from an accident while away the following weekend, they left my place early. Understandable and I am glad they found a place to rest while recovering. The creative and video projects that had been ongoing for over a month during their stay with me never amounted to anything in terms of deliverables.

It has been over a month since they left - still no shared content for the projects we had discussed. Rather than work with me, they have taken time to find contact details for my close friend and Canyoning colleague and have attempted to sell him on the idea of supporting a project using the video footage I assigned them to document as part of their Workaway tasks. I have not seen any significant progress on the video and creative projects they were assigned to and therefore this has not been a mutually beneficial exchange from my perspective.

I will say there are some great positives despite these comments. Julia has a lovely personality. Her cooking and weeding abilities were great. She is a hard worker. Toma shows significantly less interested in domestic chores other than cleaning floors. He was great at taking charge of fixing a dirt bike.

Grocery consumption during thier stay was surprisingly higher compared to consumption of others I have hosted since 2018. The higher consumption and associated costs have forced me to reconsider how I provide provisions weekly to workaway guests.
