Description
Hello! We are two people who love our planet and want to help it as much as we can. We are about to graduate from UNC-Chapel Hill with degrees in environmental science and want to go to graduate school to work in wildlife conservation. But before that, we want to gain more real-world experiences that inspire us.
We are both adventurous, open-minded, compassionate, and independent people who are solution-oriented and in tune with nature. Claire has a lot of travel experience and has volunteered in Costa Rica and Portugal through programs similar to Workaway. Neither trip went perfectly according to plan, but she was flexible and still had an incredible time. Rachel has less travel experience, but is confident in her ability to travel internationally and is excited to see more of the world. We have both lived in the state of North Carolina our entire lives, a beautiful place from the mountains to the sea, but we’re ready for a change of pace.
In addition to the environment, we are both passionate about animal welfare, education, and making the world a more accepting and equitable place for everyone. In our free time, we enjoy volunteering in our local community, reading, cooking, crafting, playing games, spending time with our loved ones, and of course, anything that involves being outdoors.Interests

Rachel's Skills:
I'm a student of marine ecology and science communication/education. In May 2025, I will be graduating with a Bachelor's degree in environmental science with minors in journalism and geology. I'm knowledgeable about ecosystems, wildlife management, sustainability, map-making/GIS, and general science. I translate this into journalism with writing, photography, videography, and environmental education and outreach. I write and research for a sustainable shopping website called Intentful Consumers (check us out!) I have also taken German through college.
I have worked many outdoor jobs and have picked up skills such as kayaking, boating, hiking, clamming, camping, foraging, marsh restoration, gardening, open-water diving, and first-aid. I worked in childcare for several years and am skilled at general childcare for ages 4-12 and science education geared towards children aged 2-18. I have also worked in hospitality for several years which taught me professional cooking, food presentation, and event planning. On the side, I have looked after neighbor's pets since I was 12, so I am also responsible and great with animals!
I consider myself to be quite handy as well! I am self-taught in sewing and embroidery and love working with my hands. I have helped build and design an aquaponics system and have my commercial drone pilot license. I grew up helping with yard work and small home renovation projects, and I am willing to help out anywhere that’s needed!
Claire's Skills:
My main skill sets are based in animal care, environmental and biological sciences. These skill sets are largely based on what I have studied during university. In May of 2025, I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science in environmental science and a minor in biology! I want to pursue veterinary medicine and one day work in wildlife rehabilitation. I have a lot of experience with the veterinary industry — I worked as a veterinary assistant for about a year and have volunteered with a number of clinics and sanctuaries! I have experience working in a clinical and laboratory setting, but I also have spent plenty of time outdoors! I am particularly fond of hiking, and while I am not the most knowledgeable about gardening, I do know the basics and really enjoy it. I also have some experience with clearing space outdoors from working with a local volunteer group to remove invasive plant species. I have basic skills in GIS programming and know Spanish on a conversational level. I am excited to put what I know to use while also learning new things along the way!Age

Feedback
Claire and Rachel pitched in with a variety of tasks, including their first ever time using a strimmer, and never failed to excel.
Pruning vines, tending to olive trees, cutting lower branches from young pines, varnishing wood, they both nailed it every time!
