  • Description

Greetings from the Canadian wilderness. Dan and I are lifelong backpack travelers, based out of our small farm in a remote part of Canada. We are really excited about our long planned adventure of exploring Ireland this spring. We are not much for cities, so are planning on touring rural Ireland, and hope to meet many new friends who share our love for the rural lifestyle.

Our plan is to head South from Dublin on March 20ish, and tour around Ireland in a roughly clockwise direction. We will end the journey back at Dublin on May 15th. We can't think of a better way of exploring this amazing country than to meet and have the honour of staying with local farmers. Of course, as any good country guest does, we are happy to roll up our sleeves and pitch in doing whatever needs doing while we are there! We also look forward to making some new friends who might enjoy the opportunity to stay in a log cabin on a wilderness farm in Canada some day!

Since we plan to see much of the island over the two months, we won't be able to stay in one place too very long, but are thinking of roughly a week. We would hope that we could bring enough common sense and experience that we can pitch in and make ourselves useful from day one.

The first of our pictures is of us in here in winter. We had temperatures down to -49 C for 5 days, and had been staying in, keeping the log furnace stoked. Then it warmed up to a balmy -16, and we were keen to get out to get some fresh air....time to go snowshoeing. The other picture is from Spain in 2018 after we did the Camino. The rest are of our place and lifestyle here in Canada, as well as some recent travel in SE Asia and Nepal.

  • More details about your skills

On our farm we have raised goats, sheep, donkeys, pigs, chickens, and turkeys and rabbits. We also have horses, and have raised dogs, and love working with both. We kept a large organic garden, and put up much of our own food.
We're pretty good and building and repairing fences and sheds and such like projects...or at least we have done a lot of that type of work. When we first moved to our farm, we acquired a log heritage home from a distant ranch. We took it apart, hauled it to our place, and rebuilt it. With that project, we learned a bit about building things.
Before moving to our farm we lived in Canada's Arctic region working in Wildlife Management (Dan) and Environmental Health (Diane).
We hope some of our experience and skills might be of use to you, and help us to be welcomed guests at your place. Oh, and we hope you don't let our age fool you...we are still both very active in canoeing, bicycle riding, backpack hiking and wild camping, and, of course working on the farm. We also play on the local volleyball and pickleball teams.

  • What else ...

Dan and I both enjoy reading, playing cards, and board games. Dan is also a stained glass artist, and I do pottery as well as fibre art (felting). I also make soap and herbal products out of our own herbs or wild plants. We really enjoy traditional music, and I try to play a few instruments.
