Description
I'm a positive, happy woman, non smoking. I love music and nature. I have three children who are already grown up. I love traveling, discovering new things and learning. I am particularly interested in permaculture, herbalism and alternative building. I'm doing workaway because I want to see the world without contributing to its destruction. Lush flowering trees, fruit trees, bougainvilleas in all colors, everything is incredibly large and magnificent, plus lots of succulents around the house. It's worth going up to the roof garden often to watch the beautiful view to Mount Etna.

The accommodation was very comfortable, private and spacious. Next to it was the outdoor shower, which I really appreciated. The veranda with its large sliding glass doors is difficult to protect from insects, so I recommend bringing something preventative or remedial if you are sensitive. When it comes to cleanliness in the shared spaces - bathroom, kitchen/dining area - you shouldn't set your standards too high. Concerning the food we were well provided with what we needed, although with little variety. We often had bananas and persimmon puree, and finally, it was nice to taste the olive oil we harvested ourselves! To celebrate the olive harvest, Giorgio invited us three times to a very good restaurant on the marina, "Mare Kambo", and also often for a coffee, dolce or an ice cream. Excursions together included a lovely walk in the forest and a very impressive hike to the "Monti Sartorius" on the northern flank of Mount Etna.

The work went well as a team - with another workawayer, with Giorgio and sometimes helping friends from outside - and we were proud to be able to bring the weekly yield to the oil mill. The daily helping hours were a little longer - usually from 8 am to 5 pm, with a long siesta - but there was time off on other days to compensate. In the evening, we went to Fiumefreddo for a limoncello spritz or went to bed early.

Unfortunately, I hardly got a chance to swim in the sea. The only passable path is a long one, 30 to 50 minutes depending on how fast you run or walk, leading first through a wild garbage dump and then along a busy road without sidewalk. Because it's already dark at 7pm in October, this route was rarely an option on the working days. Unfortunately, the bikes are not ready for use and I didn't have the time or materials to repair them.

I used the weekends for one- or two-day trips to Taormina, Syracuse and Catania. The train station is only half an hour's walk away, so all these cities are within easy reach. The atmosphere and the sights there are great - but I don't want to hide the fact that I find the whole environment pretty depressing. The municipal waste problem is far from being solved. Waste is just everywhere, in front of the houses, on the streets. Not just household waste, but also demolition and building rubble. The old houses, many of which were once beautiful, look largely neglected. The newer ones don't even try to be attractive or are often unfinished, ruins are a common sight. There are hardly any sidewalks or they are broken up and overgrown. There is also a lack of street lighting, e.g. in Fiumefreddo this is a problem in the evenings. Railroad stations and churches are an exception - they are very well maintained everywhere.
Waste is exemplary separated on Giorgio's property and he has been campaigning vehemently for years for a functioning waste disposal system. But it's a battle against windmills, you can risk your existence without achieving anything. It's a shame for the administration. These people don't deserve this, because the country has so many wonderful resources.
