Description
I am an artist, nature-lover, and avid learner. I specialize in children's illustration, film, sewing, and anything else I decide I want to create. My passion is to help people utilize their creativity to bring us closer to ourselves, nature, and others. Having studied art and sociology during my undergrad, creatively problem solving to help others is what I want to do in life - working towards being an art therapist at a graduate program and I'm hoping my workaway experience here will be taste of what a life helping others will be like. Currently been self studying Japanese Language for 3+ years and studied illustration and ceramics in korea for a summer. I love learning about new cultures through connection and language and plan on being a sponge soaking up new knowledge from place to place for a year.
Past professional experience includes teaching and volunteering opportunities with children. I've been a camp counselor for an organization that supports kids impacted by cancer, a tech camp introducing kids age 6-8 to robotics coding with Lego Mindstorms, was a grarphic designer for a women's non-profit supporting the academic and mental development of underserved girls and women, and taught ceramics to both kids and adults at a studio in NYC.
I also have lots of experience in retail and customer facing food and service positions. I've been a cater waiter throughout my time in school and have worked at a clothing and art supply retail stores as an associate. I am a diligent hard worker who is able to do any task that needs to get done from cleaning, organizing, inventory, and customer service.
Above all, I love to connect with people across different cultures and learn how people creatively problem solve from differing cultural perspectives. I can't stick to one hobby so I've had my hand in textile printing, wood working, book binding, clothes making, and ceramics. My main medium as an artist illustration is watercolor and gouache. A lot of my creative inspiration comes from being in nature and telling stories that elicit the child like wonder and joy I believe everyone is capable of experiencing no matter what age.
I also studied sociology in my undergrad so learning about social dynamics of new countries is always of interest of me. I love talking about complex topics and ideas related to society, politics, art, and media. My favorite youtuber is MinaLe and her video essays on culture and media if that tells you anything about me.
I am always down to go for a walk in nature or debate and talk about any topic. I want to learn about differing points of view because I believe that's how we come to better understand each other. Also I had cats growing up and used to ride horses and visit my friends' horse farms as a kid so I'm used to and no stranger to animals but I'm scared of bugs (lol).
Also I love cooking and dancing. Something to know about me is the spicier the better. Since my taste buds have basically been numbed, I am on the hunt for new flavors I've never tried that will blow me away so be ready to share many recipes and meals together. I used to also be a competitive ballroom dancer and in an asian hip hop dance group in college so I love any music I can feel compelled to move to.

I have been self studying Japanese for 3+ years and practice often with my fiance and his family who are Japanese. I am working towards my proficiency certification and love learning about how culture is embedded into words and grammar and vice versa. The aha moment when I truly understand a little bit more of someone from a different culture is why I want to continue to learn new languages after I get certified in Japanese. Next on my list includes Chinese, Korean, and Spanish.
