  • Description

Hello! We are two American friends (not a couple, just college students on a budget) looking to do something meaningful between semesters. Jason is a junior majoring in computer engineering at the University of Virginia, while Andrew is a junior majoring in data science at George Washington University.

Before junior year, we reflected on our extracurricular experiences and felt something was missing. Internships and other opportunities have been beneficial, but they develop a relatively narrow set of skills in the bigger picture. There is no doubt that the cultivation of these abilities is crucial for our future success in the workforce. However, we see Workaway as a chance to learn other practical skills that are equally beneficial (and perhaps more emotionally rewarding). While we know a fair amount about programming, computers, and math, we admittedly lack in other areas. Thus, we hope to improve as skilled workers through this experience.

Most importantly, we want to grow as people. In many ways, our upbringings have been insulated in that we have primarily lived and worked with people similar to ourselves. There is comfort in similarity, but it is also blinding in the sense that being around the same type of people means we do not know the ways of life that exist beyond our bubble. What if one of these ways of life better suits us? The answer is that we will not know unless we experience them.

Logistically speaking, we are two fit individuals eager to complete challenging physical and intellectual tasks. As mentioned, we have no experience in farming, but we (especially Andrew) have a strong desire to learn. Above all else, we are problem-solvers and critical thinkers; this ability will translate to productive outcomes with assigned duties, even without previous experience.
