  • Description

Hi, my name is Aisling and I’m 22 years old (my name is Irish, hence the unusual spelling, and is pronounced Ashlin).

I have recently graduated from the University of Nottingham with a degree in sport and exercise science. I have a passion for sport and exercise, especially strength and conditioning and I aim to do a masters in this subject when I return to England.
I think that most of my motivation comes from consistency and discipline, having to show up for myself everyday, because if I want to reach the goals I set for myself then I need to push myself to do so. I think this is reflected through my love for sport and sometimes having to do things that are uncomfortable- for example I’m not the biggest fan of running and I do really struggle but when I complete some cardio I thank myself for doing it and I’m proud for pushing myself out of my comfort zone. I try to apply this mindset to all aspects of life because sometimes the most beautiful moments happen when you push yourself that little bit further. Before coming travelling I was unbelievably nervous and I questioned whether I’d made the right decision leaving my family for such a long period of time, as family is one of the most important things in my life. However I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and got on that one way flight, I’m so happy and proud of myself that I did as I’m getting to experience life changing moments everyday. Not only that but even the little things; cows crossing the road, smiling at strangers because we don’t understand each others words, friends dancing on the beach, all those little things that soften the heart should be appreciated too, as most of the time they are the things that we will remember the most. If these moments aren’t motivation enough, then I don’t know what is…

    What makes me happy?
I want to circle back around to my family, they are the driving force in everything that I do. I have a brother and sister that I would consider my two best friends, getting to experience life with them is the best. My parents, without them and their encouragement this trip wouldn’t have been possible, they have shaped me into the outgoing and thoughtful person I am today. Although leaving them was the hardest part about coming on this trip, I am so grateful that they are there, ready to listen to me ramble on about my days of adventure. I have also had the privilege to grow up with so many cousins and aunts and uncles that treat me like their own. Two of my aunties have done a lot of backpacking and seen so much of the world, with them as role models it has encouraged me to know that if they can do it I can do it too. Getting to live life with such an amazing support system around me, shaping me into a happy individual who wants to make the most out of everything I do, whilst sharing it all with those around me.

Then there’s the family we get to pick out ourselves - friends. Throughout life we meet so many people, but there’s certain individuals you meet that you instantly connect with on a much deeper level. I believe that everything happens for a reason, meaning that these people have come into my life for a reason, to shape me in some way and to grow with them. These unbreakable bonds should and could be found anywhere around the world. Whilst travelling I have met so many new people and do believe I have found friends for life to add to the amazing friends I have waiting at home. I cannot wait to meet new people, learn new stories, and there is a comfort in knowing that although I’m solo travelling, I will never do it alone.

I believe that being able to travel the world is a luxury, not everyone is able to do go to new places, immerse in difference cultures, try new food, learn new languages (even if it is only a few sentences). These are all the things I love, I am so lucky to be able to travel, and I am proud to say at the age of 22 I would consider myself well travelled having visited many places including Ireland, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Cuba, some areas in America and now south east Asia. I’ve got to experience so many different places and a goal of mine is to see as many countries, cities and little tiny towns as possible.

Sunsets, when I say I’m a sucker for sunsets it’s crazy. I’m that person who sees its 5pm, my cue to go out and find a cute spot to watch the sunset, sit in silence and appreciate the beauty the world has to offer every single evening. I am so grateful to say I have got to witness the most breathtaking sunsets of my life on my south east Asia trip so far and honestly I can’t wait until it’s 5pm.

  • More details about your skills

I am a very creative person, having done photography at A level where I earned an A*. I have taken forward many skills from this and put a lot of time and effort into creating fitness content. I have a TikTok and instagram fitness account where I post a variety of videos including gym vlogs, workout plans, and tips and tricks. Originally I began the account in order to help my career however I found joy in making my work creative and continue to post with the goal of gaining a larger following and support in order to help and encourage individuals within the fitness injury. I have also recently started posting travel content, trying new gyms around south east Asia as well as videos of some of the beautiful moments I’ve been privileged to experience. This creativity is a great skill and I aim to take it into any role I may gain with workaway.

I also have experience teaching primary school students, proving my leadership ability and the capability to adapt to many situations. I really enjoyed this job, allowing me to witness individuals learn and grow, knowing I had an impact on their lives and education is a privilege. I also have a lot of experience within hospitality, both waitressing and bartending, I loved these roles allowing me to socialise and make connections with new people on a day to day basis. I believe I am a people person and very outgoing, aiming to take these skills into my workaway roles, as I will be meeting and interacting with new people and I cannot wait to start building new connections with people around the world.
