  • Description

We are a proactive and personable couple, with an adaptable, flexible attitude. Passionate about working with people, creativity and striving to make a positive difference.

We love being outdoors, hiking, swimming etc, as well as the slower side of life - reading, writing and drawing. We are both practical and enjoy getting stuck in!

As supporters of Greenpeace, The Guardian, Wateraid & Amnesty international we endeavour to be part of organisations and communities that can make a difference and contribute towards creating change for a fairer, more sustainable world.

(Joe) I was an active volunteer for The Guardian’s Foundation programme, becoming a mentor for students at GCSE level. This involves working with teenagers from more perceivably difficult backgrounds than what could be considered the norm. Often with English as a 2nd or 3rd language and other forms of adversity that can make school and education more challenging.
As part of the programme we worked on developing confidence, communication, organisation and creativity. Two of my mentees competed in a competition to launch a news product directed at 14-17 year olds, for which they progressed through two rounds and presented their business plan to a set of industry judges in the finals, eventually achieving 2nd place.

I have experience in performance, in my early twenties acting in a range of different plays on stage in Manchester including ‘Mugged Off’ at The Lowry Theatre and a few episodes of Emmerdale and Hollyoaks.

As a keen sportsman I am a competitive golfer, captaining my former club’s Derbyshire and Cheshire team. I played rugby for both club and school. I’m a casual but frustrated squash player, and for my first love football, well I have just about retired from the dream of turning professional. An avid sports fan, long-time supporter of Manchester City (I have the scars as well as the smile).

Currently we are taking time from professional life to explore the world, meet new people of different backgrounds and cultures. Aiming to work on personal development and well being. We are seeking new challenges that will help us achieve this and, as outlined, make a positive difference where we can in the countries and places we visit.

More details about my language interests
(Joe) I have been learning in school and have been able to use it accordingly in exchanges in restaurants, hotels, airports etc. where it's useful. However, whilst travelling the Americas I am endeavouring to learn more so that I am able to converse and exchange properly with the local people I meet. I look forward to any opportunities to learn more and use this to help further with any volunteering opportunities

Happy to share my CV but here's a brief overview that should help you understand my background and skills.

    Career:
In my last role I was the head of Sports Partnerships at Social Chain, one of the largest social media network's in the world.

    Key responsibilities include:

    - Maintaining and growing the health of our social media pages, leading on strategy and content focus.
    - Responsible for all revenue secured against these channels, leading the agency and investment teams to deliver partnerships & key sponsorships across our branded content.

    Other areas of interest:

Guardian Foundation: As highlighted in my profile description I volunteer for The Guardian foundation, working with children and teenagers from disadvantaged backgrounds to help support their studies and personal development.

Boat Work: Whilst travelling Europe I have worked on boats, as a day worker, this could mean anything from cleaning, to helping with maintenance and repair.

Keen gardener: I have landscaped my own garden and worked with family to help with their's too.

Bar Work: Whilst studying at University I worked for the Albert's Shed group in Manchester as a bartender and waiter.

Finally, and I suppose this goes without saying, I'm not afraid of hard work, I enjoy being and working outside so any projects that need the extra pair of hands to help with the heavy lifting I'm more than willing to help you succeed with your ongoing projects and look forward to the challenge!

  • What else ...

I briefly mentioned in my profile description about my time working in the theatre industry, this really does lean into the other side of my character; the enjoyment and passion I have for creativity and original work.

As part of this I'm an avid reader and I also write as well. At home I'm part of a writers group in Manchester where we come together to share our work, review, feedback and help one another with our personal projects. I have been working on a collection of short stories which I'm hoping to publish in the future.

Whilst this isn't a main focus of what I expect from volunteering, I feel coming together and meeting new people is an opportunity for creative space. I would be more than happy to work with people, either individually or in groups to help with any projects that involve writing and performing.
