Description
Elli- I am retired and finally embarking on a full-time adventure of painting the canvas of this new chapter of my life with beautiful colors of people and places along the way. I have professional experience in education, gardening, and light construction.

I have my dart and map. Could it land at your destination or project? I have helped on earthbag homes in the middle of Death Valley, walking dogs and planting flowers in Germany, pruning olive trees in Croatia, teaching English in a castle in Belgium, and the list goes on, and I am not stopping anytime soon. The journey and lovely souls inspire me. I'm looking forward to the upcoming adventure!

Elli has a diverse background in rehabilitation, having served as a counselor, educator, and author. A California native who has seen the world and worked in Europe for six months as part of a work exchange program. In addition to her experience instructing English as a Second Language in the Republic of Korea, Elli has a passion for the performing arts, meditation, and seeing the world. Elli has participated in a labor exchange in Death Valley, where she helped construct earthbag buildings, among other things. Elli is a motivated individual who can think on her feet.

I spent 40 days of my intended 80 days. (I received a job offer) I hadn't lived off grid for a while, yet it wasn't difficult to adjust to. I was given a super private and cozy room to myself with a wood burning stove and comfy bed. Even though I was not good at making fires, Gerd always made sure I had wood, and Carolina provided the "fire… read more starters!" I was able to find used clothes and shoes that were left by other workaway volunteers. (meant to be cleaning rags I think). The old clothes saved my personal wardrobe. You will work in the dirt, mud, brambles and nettles and normal clothes will not be the same. Carolina said there is a thrift store in town to buy clothes for the garden if you are like me and you are traveling light and more than one destination. As an experienced gardener, I feel it is super important to respect the methods that Gerd & Carolina have found to be the best for the land that they have literally 'grown' to know. Gerd is a master designer of the garden beds, planting times, seedlings with a knack for using a method that has proven every year to produce a lot of food! Now, Carolina is the chef! She can transform veggies, spices into perfect yummy cuisines and homemade bread! One day I was weeding a 'jungle' garden bed after smelling the aroma of Carolina's cooking. I heard a 'growl' coming from the tall grass and I wondered what type of animal would visit me. Then I realized it was my stomach growling in 'stereo'. Lunch is so delicious! Carolina is a bright light with a smile that lights the room, and she is the "DJ" of our morning dance sessions to get our circulation and good vibes going for the day! Then, another beautiful soul is Beate! Although she is busy with her house project that is near the main house on the property, it's a lucky day when you can hear her singing in the lovely chapel (also on the property) and even singing while she works-her voice is one that can raise the roof off the chapel. You can depend on Beate for a lovely smile and a hug if you need one. Overall, it doesn't matter your age or experience, there is so much to learn here. From the history of the village (Gerd is a great historian!) to the land, gardening methods and appreciating being in nature, hugging trees, hikes, meditating and disconnecting from the hustle of city life. I will carry this memory with me everywhere and when I was leaving it was hard not to feel sad. It felt like 'home' :-)
