  • Description

Hi! I'm Niamh, I'm from Edinburgh. Previously I worked in diagnostic laboratories doing a typical 9 to 5. While interested in the science I was quite unhappy being so disconnected from nature and realized that wasn't how I wanted to live my life. I have used workaway as part of my travels in New Zealand and found it so wonderful to connect with community and learn about the region. I spent most of my time on farms learning a range of skills and a way of life I loved. Following this, I returned to Edinburgh to continue the life I left. I found myself longing for the rural setting, missing the community, the peace and most important, doing work I enjoyed and found meaningful. I am keen to use workaway to explore my own country and see what it has to offer. My dream is to move the west coast, hopefully buying land which I can rewild. My family are keen but apprehensive on also moving. I am hoping if I make the leap, they will see the magic and one day follow.

In New Zealand I stayed at a few small holding properties where I learned a variety of skills. These include animal care, building skills and diy, composting & compost toilets, permaculture gardening including maintenance of gardening equipment (6 months experience as a city gardener). I am very hardworking and independent, and am open to learning new things. Comfortable driving large vehicles and trailers. Specific projects include ongoing daily upkeep of animals and paddock infrastructure, tree planting and tree protection, and weekly vehicle maintenance.

I am keen to learn all that is involved in operating a farm or estate, and I am more interested in being a jack of all trades rather than a specialist. I am currently living in Edinburgh and am exploring opportunities on workaway which will be a stepping stone to relocated rurally.

  • More details about your skills

I have experience doing community outreach work in India. This involved engaging with locals of a variety of issues in setting such as school and healthcare centres.

In my free time in Scotland I love to pack a bag and head to the hills. At home I love finding projects to keep me busy and learning new skills along the way. I hugely enjoy learning new skills regardless of their importance.
