My name is Nash (due to ID verification my profile name still contains Nils - sorry for any possible confusion), I am 24 years old and I am from a rural region in Northern Germany. I want to share and gain experiences while visiting different countries and getting to know new people and their cultures.
I am a very outdoorsy person who loves plants and nature and have high interest in botany, farming and herbal medicine. In general, I am a very open minded and friendly person even if I seem a bit reserved in the beginning - I will open up pretty quickly though. In addition, I am always willig to help and get my hands dirty and can work well in the team but also independently.
In my free time I really like to be creative, go swimming, go for a walk/hike in nature, gather plants to make teas/tinctures/salves or just hang out with my friends.

Here are some information on my work experience:

- After graduating from high school in 2019 I travelled to Canada for a year working mainly on an 20 acre organic farm on Vancouver Island. On this farm I gained first experiences in gardening, farming and animal care while taking care of a variety of animals (chickens, ducks, turkeys, rabbits, pigs and sheep) and big gardens and food forests.
- During my time in Canada I also spent roughly three months living with a family and taking care of the two kids (they were 4 and 6 years old at the time).
- Coming back to Germany after my gap year I have been working in retail for a year. In my free time I have deepened my gardening skills and gained some experience in beekeeping.
- In 2021 I started a three year apprenticeship in plant breeding which successfully finished in June 2024. At work I am specialized in the breeding of spring oilseed rape (canola) and turf grasses but also work on different projects regarding biodiversity and catch crops and in seed technology / research. Therefore I am skilled in the cultivation of plants for experimental and multiplication purposes.
- I spent another four months at the company deepening my skill and supervising different projects in biodiversity and data collection.
- Furthermore I finished two online courses in herbal medicine. Here I learned about the uses, forms and dosages of plants as a form of therapy and gained basic knowledge of the constituents of different plants and how they work in the body.
- Currently I am working as a gardener for annual and perennial plants, lettuce and some forestry plants in a greenhouse in Iceland.
- Over the summer I am also helping out as a waiter and dishwasher in a little Café/ restaurant.

I am really looking forward to get to know you and being able to gain lots of new experiences, developing new and deepening existing skills.

I stayed with the family for six days in November. As I had troubles finding a host here in Iceland they kindly took me in between their vacation and the next Workaway which was very nice. I wanted to stay for 11 days but had to leave early due to major problems with my phone battery.

Maybe I just feel that way as it was my first Workaway with a family whose first language I couldn't understand or speak but there was basically no communication. I know Icelanders are a bit cold in the beginning so I was trying to give the stay a chance - but unless I myself specifically talked to them or they wanted to give me brief work explanations there was barely any communication between us. (I actually feel like I had more of a decent conversation with their 9 year old daughter on my first day of work than with the parents during the week)
Maybe that'll be different for your stay though.
Overall the work was about 5-6 hours a day, usually cleaning, moving stuff around or some building - it's quite hard work every now and then (carrying many 20-27kg bags of wool for example) and unfortunately they don't have a great variety of tools to work with.
The food situation was not the best for me either - I know they stated in their profile that they have trouble hosting vegetarians/vegans as they eat a lot of meat and fish. I am a vegan but was willing to integrate some meat into my diet for the sake of the stay but no dairy due to lactose intolerance (which is stated in my profile and I mentioned it on the first morning). Unfortunately there was not much of a compromise and the "traditional Icelandic food" reminded me more of a American lifestyle (pizza, burgers, hotdogs,...)
Due to the lack of communication I didn't feel in a position to actually speak up and mention stuff that bothered me.

So all in all I did not have the greatest experience with the stay, unfortunately. I am still very thankful for the experience and for taking me in when no one else would! The area around the farm is also very beautiful! Highlight of the week definitely was fetching the last sheep from the mountains!

The whole situation might look completely different when you're there in Spring / Summer, speak Icelandic or stay there for a longer time and have enough time to melt the ice :)
