  • Description

    Hi there,
Yes, I realise Workaway is primarily for young travellers, while I am at the other end of the age spectrum. However, I remain active, enthusiastic and flexible! I am a native speaker of English, a well-experienced and fully qualified teacher (CELTA, and Post Graduate Certificate of Education from the University of London,) and am looking to travel and teach in summer/autumn 2023.

I have 15 years' experience as a lecturer in a State college in south London (UK), teaching adult learners (aged16-70!) from all over the world. In addition, I have extensive experience in UK state secondary schools (ages 11-16), and am currently teaching an adapted curriculum to newly arrived migrant teenagers ( age 15-16) in a local south London secondary school. I also provide provide private tuition to a number of local migrant families - to both children and adults..

For the past 10 years I have been working with children in a range of contexts. The pay is low but the fun factor really HIGH! My full-time role has been in UK primary schools (age3-11 and including Nursery/Kindergarten) supporting Special Needs youngsters, including those with autism. I enjoy helping children learn, and love encouraging their creativity. Prior to this I was a volunteer with a local youth club, and currently work with a railclub for ASD youngsters.

Over the past twenty years I have mainly travelled in Central and Eastern Europe, getting to know something of the home countries of many of my students. I have also travelled in Russia, enjoying working holidays with teachers, schools and summer camps, and currently run an online group for a number of students and learners there.

So, what can I offer? I am still youthfully enthusiastic, and get a great kick out of travelling - experiencing new cultures and meeting people. I love being out and about - for example walking or cycling in the countryside - but also adore cities - I studied Urban Geography at University. I enjoy cycling ( non-competitive), swimming, gardening and basic DIY, and am particularly interested in transport/environmental issues.

As mentioned, I love working with children- but appreciate that this can be hard work and challenging; my work with 'difficult' children has left me with a number of scars - but has been constantly stimulating. Children never exhaust my patience, and I still have a good sense of humour.

So, if you'd like a traveller to practise your English with (or formally teach you/your family/your students), who can fit in well and doesn't mind hard work, and who would also love to become one of your team - here I am - I look forward to hearing from you!

After the enforced break due to Covid, I am eager to resume my travels but have no specific destinations in mind. It would be great to revisit Russia again one day, or return to Central/Eastern Europe, or Central Asia! But there again, I have never been to Spain, or Georgia or Armenia!
