  • Description

Hello. We are Lukas and Julie.

    - Why travel.

We wish to travel and will do so with a great curiosity and a certain degree of humbleness.

One of the reasons why we are drawn to something like Workaway (which Julie has had good experiences with in the past), is how it can help enable you to participate and become part of the everyday life of some place. In our travels we would like - not just to visit - but to form a relationship to the people and the places. We are keen to learn and to be of help.

The perspective of the world and our part in it becomes filtered through the lens of these sorts of experiences. We would like to continually grow.

    .- Who we are.

We met each other through a kind of community that developed in a book/antique store. It is a lovely diverse group of people that meet to read aloud poetry, play music, have conversations and in general to have a good time. It is a welcoming space. Something we really appreciate about it is the aspect of different generations sharing, the eldest of us being in their eighties and the youngest in their twenties.

Art holds a special place to both us - in various forms.

We both sometimes paint and write.

Julie is a musician - she has played on the street, in bars and at various concerts. As well as being a musician and has an education in music therapy.

One of the things we really like to do, is to spend time mushroom hunting, familiarising ourselves with different species.
We enjoy the experience of our senses becoming acutely aware - focusing on certain shapes and smells. We are slowly but surely progressing in being able to recognize species we are certain of.
The moment of finding an edible species or a species we know can produce such joy. This goes for edible plants and medicinals as well.
There is something special about getting to know them - also the inedible species we get to know in the process.
It enhances the relationship to the local areas where we pick edibles and to the meals we create with them.
That simple act feels very good.

Lukas has a great interest in history. He has always been curious about people and lives that are unlike his. And studying history (as well as traveling) helps to broaden his horizon, which he is very appreciative of.

Last summer we saw representations of the earliest found cave paintings in a replica of the cave in which they were found. This made a lasting impression on both of us. The past was so alive. It was an experience of how vibrant it is - “The interior and external world of being alive” - and an acknowledgement of the fact that we are stepping into it, with our little lives and the experiences that fill them.

    This goes for everything alive.

We both have a great respect and love of animals. Both of us love being around them and have grown up in the company of animals.

More details about my language interests
We are keen to learn new languages and appreciate the experience of, little by little, getting familiar with the sounds of a language. There is so much more embedded in those sounds than just the meaning of the words. The mutual exchange that happens in language learning, whether it is learning or teaching, is great.

  • More details about your skills

Cooking is something we both enjoy and care about. We both have work experience from kitchens. Now, in cooking our everyday meals, we continue to develop our feel for it. Every now and then we cook meals for a larger group of friends. Coming together around a meal is something quite valuable to us.

We really appreciate being completely absorbed in something ... put our efforts to it. We have curiosity and the desire to learn and to give ... and something to give we believe.

In the first five years of her twenties Julie was travelling around Europe, North Africa and Australia where she accumulated some knowledge about permaculture. This she did through living on land, the experiences of taking part in projects - through other people's knowledge and through books. There is so much to learn - mostly there is great interest in it and a desire to get hands-on experiences again. In the future she dreams of being able to establish a food forest.
