Hi, my name is Ian, I'm 23 years old, and I'm from Portland, Maine, USA.
Since completing university in May 2024, I have been working in the legal field, traveling, and doing work exchanges.
Right now, I am interested in developing my trade skills, specifically in metalworking. I've also recently been doing some DIY documentary production, and would like to explore that field more.
My home, Maine, is a beautiful place with mountains, the sea, islands, forests, and the four seasons on display. The wilderness is never far away, and I take every opportunity I can to go camping, backpacking, and kayak-packing. For fun, I like to cook, read, play guitar, muse about astrology, and practice sports such as rock climbing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
For me, Workaway is a beautiful exercise in "laying on the ground and scoffing" (George Bataille). In a world where meaning can easily be stripped from our labor, I find this the arrangement of work-exchange refreshing because, at its best, it is a means for complete strangers to help each other find joy through hard work independently of the market.

I have experience making fiber art installations, sewing clothes, using natural dyes to color fabric, and embroidery. I have experience working as a cook in the restaurant industry, as a camp counselor leading large group activities for children, teaching English and sports to children. I have a small amount of woodworking experience with hand tools, and I know how to use basic industrial tools as well.
