    PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER
    Hi there, Aloha!

    My name is Sonia, and I run an Ashram, Academy & Healing Center dedicated mainly (but not only) women, located in the tropical beach town of Varkala, Kerala, Southwest India. This ashram offers accommodation only for Women and therapies, readings, private sessions and events for both men and woman.

    Our Ashram is a center of healing, education and peace. Workawayers can expect to experience inner growth and meaningful connection, while participating in this spiritual environment.

    Qualities we look for in applicants: commitment, positivity, honesty, creativity, motivation and authenticity.

    We love people who can align with the higher purpose of our Ashram and who can form heart connections with the work that they perform. The environment of our Ashram thrives when everyone is cooperating and working together in harmony.

    SONIA’S OTHER CREATIVE ENDEAVORS
    My artistic creative skills include writing, singing, leading shamanic journeys with drum and native indian chanting, free style oriental and belly dance and original dance performances. I also love music and photography [both taking photos and posing for creative photo sessions].

    ADVENTURE
    I absolutely love horse riding, paragliding, mountain trekking, long walks, bike trips, scuba diving, swimming for an hour on the ocean far across the waves, where the sea is calm and there is no one around.

    LIFE STYLE
    My diet consists of mostly whole foods, vegan, and plant based foods and avoiding caffeine, white sugar and processed foods. Over the last 1 year I have been doing a transition to a semi raw food diet.
    I do not smoke, drink alcohol, nor use drugs.
    However, I do believe in free will and not rigid patterns, if I feel to have non vegan or do any other thing, I will, however, normally, I do have the lifestyle I mentioned above.

    SPIRITUAL PRACTICE
    I have a kind of yogini life style, I perform yoga, meditation, prayers, positive affirmations, visual board, as much as possible, on a daily basis. Occasionally I do special invocations, "pujas" and rituals. My natural wake-up time is usually between 4:00 and 6:00am.

    In life, I balance my time with home and family pursuits, receiving massages and therapy, and spending time in natural reserves and interacting with wild animals [especially mammals]. My work is one of my passions and I teach and inspire people to have better, happier, and more fulfilled lives.

    I am a mother and I have two lovely daughters one born in 2012 by cesarean and the other born in 2014 by natural home birth.

    SPIRITUALITY
    I'm located in a Hindu area with several temples. There is Durga & Kali Temple 10 minutes walking from here and a 2000 year old temple 5 minutes away by rickshaw. Varkala is often known as the “Varanasi of the South.” I have lived here for 7 years, and I can assure you, this is a Vortex: an amazingly energetic and spiritually powerful place.

    YOGA AND AYURVEDA
    There are yoga and Ayurveda everywhere. [You can benefit from ayurvedic massages that usually last for an hour or two.] Ayurvedic treatments are plentiful here, but it is worth noting that sufficient rest is required after these treatments. We respectfully remind Workaways that their work quota would have to be fulfilled prior to these treatments.
    The same can be said for treatments and courses at the Ashram and, once again, to prioritize your working commitment.

    BEACHES
    There are several beaches along the coast, the main beach, Papanasam Beach, is 15 minutes walking from the Ashram. Black Beach and Oddayam Beach are within 20 minutes walking distance and Kapphil Beach is accessible walking through the cliffs for about an hour.

    Available on the main beach, are sun umbrellas, surf and body boards for renting, and stand up paddling boards. Paragliding, with a professional, is available on the cliff.

    BACKWATERS
    The backwaters are 15 minutes from here by rickshaw and it’s a magical place where you can go on a canoe trip to the Golden Island and stop for the sunset in a non-touristic beach.

    LOCAL MARKETS
    In the early morning time, you can visit the fishermen on the beach and the local vegetable and fish markets, where you can find some organic local fruits and vegetables.

    KAPPHIL BEACH
    This is a gorgeous beach with stunning visuals of the sea and backwaters. Kapphil beach is 20 minutes away [by rickshaw] and is also accessible by hiking through an amazing trail through the cliffs where you see palm trees and nature amidst the infinite Arabian Sea! You can also connect with the local people. This beach comes highly recommended and has been described as breathtaking.

    SHOPS
    There are tourist shops on the cliff with all kinds of offers and you can also visit the local shops in Varkala town [10 minutes away by rickshaw]. I'm especially fond of a Tibetan crystal shop on the cliff!

    RESTAURANTS
    There are the restaurants on the cliff with all kinds of offers and many vegetarian options and you can also visit the local restaurants and chai shops in Varkala town and here around the cliff. There is wi-fi in almost every restaurant.

    MEET PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD
    Varkala Beach is a place visited by people from all around the world, most of them, interested or curious about alternative areas, alternative lifestyle, yoga people, therapists, teachers, musicians, etc. The high season time is between October and April and the top is January to March.

    WHAT I CAN DO FOR YOU
    Tell you about the culture in Kerala;
    A guided walk through the Cliffs (if you stay long enough);
    Take you to the Sacred Spring on the Cliff;
    Take you for a puja (spiritual ceremony) at Durga Temple.
