    Description

My name is Mélissa, I'm 21 years old and and I am the founder of a free public English teaching school in Nong Khiaw in the north of Laos.

In October 2018, I encountered a man called Sabu who set up a free English class in his living room for underprivileged children of Nong Khiaw. I was inspired by his motivation to help the people of Laos due to their lower economic status and yet they still must pay for education. This inspired me to set up a non-profit organization to help the children of Laos develop their English speaking to create greater job prospects for them in order to keep up with the growing tourism industry S.E Asia is experiencing.

Through hard work and many discussions with the educational office in Nong Khiaw, we were able to set up an English department in Nong Khiaw Secondary School in renovating an old, unused part of the school into a suitable classroom to accommodate the number of children.
Due to serious health problem, Sabu got to leave the project. I was lucky enough that the local people in Nong Khiaw were as passionate as we were in developing the children’s education to open many doors for them leading to new opportunities.

On the 18th of February 2019 we opened our first classroom to the local children and decided to create an education pole within our organization, word of our school got around and it became more popular.
I got lucky to have people joining us and helped develop this project.
The first hurdle we faced was due to the increased volume of children wanting to learn English, With a higher volume of children, this meant we needed a larger number of volunteers which meant we had to build further facilities such as an office, bungalows and a kitchen for the volunteers to use.

In September 2019, we've had over 150 students register in September 2019 ! The local school lent us two extra classes to accommodate all our students. We currently hold 7 English classes five afternoons per week.

In January 2020, our organization kept developing and we opened an ecologic pole and expend our site with a garden and extra accommodation.

Come aboard for an extraordinary human experience. Volunteering positions are great for people of all ages, from recent college graduates to retirees seeking meaningful opportunities to share their knowledge and experience.
Volunteers don't necessarily need experience in working with children and English teaching. We are looking for open-minded volunteers with a responsible attitude and a willingness to help, who are interested in sharing knowledge and stories. We would love to learn about your culture and teach you about the Lao culture as well.
Students are excited to meet English speakers from all over the world.
Our English classes are separated in 7 groups. At the beginning of the week we will attribute to each volunteer 3 groups that you will teach during the week.
Volunteers are divided in two teams and teach only 3 hours per day from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM, supported by our Lao teachers.
    ECOLOGY

Volunteer are in charge of the commercial aspect necessary to the fundraising, optimizing the learning conditions of the children (crowdfunding campaign, search for new partnerships, promotions of the ancillary activities of the school (Ex: sale of bamboo straws ....).

    YOUR PERSONAL TOUCH
Everyone has something special in itself and is able to bring something new for the school. You are more than welcome to involve yourself with your own project idea.
Students are interested in learning about different cultures and languages through drawing, singing, dancing and playing music... also enjoy exploring current technology, like laptops and ipads etc.

Helping Monday to Friday with the children is very fulfilling but also challenging. On Saturday afternoon, we offer different types of activities for children and teenagers to balance learning the English language and having fun (painting, photography, dance, music, treks, theater, conversation classes...). Activities are chosen and organized by volunteers and teachers during the week.

Volunteers have Sunday off to relax or visit the surrounding area. For those willing to get out and explore, there are nearby caves, waterfalls viewpoints, treks, swimming-pool, boat trips, kayak, meditation etc...
