    Description

We are plant lovers who are creating a herb farm on an abandoned orchard.

At the moment, we need help with general maintenance of our cabins and replacing the roofing with more durable material. Also help on the land with planting olive trees, like clearing and piling stones from paths, pruning trees and shrubs, weeding herb and veg beds, making new veg beds involving digging and stone wall construction.

We are in service to the plants and the land and hope to infuse in others that sense of being part of giving back to the planet that is so important to us. We honour the plants through medicine, music and food and run a 100% vegan project, and we ask you to experience being vegan during your stay with us and not bring animal products onsite.

We have a water bore hole which has a solar pump, all our electricity is from a separate solar system and with our compost toilets, we are effectively off grid. This means everyone who comes to stay has a responsibility about energy and water conserving practices.

We have limited wifi available in the communal kitchen area and 2 bikes which can be used to get around to the nearby beaches.

We are happy to share basic gardening knowledge relevant for growing in a hot, dry climate. People will also be able to learn about basic building skills and irrigation, however, we would be very grateful for folk coming who already have some previous experience in garden work and construction.

    Help

    We need help with:
    1. Re-roofing 4 cabins and our hexagonal event space.
    2. Planting trees and transplanting seedlings into garden beds, checking irrigation points and watering in general.
    3. Help with weatherproofing the outside of our cabins with adobe earth.
    4. Harvesting veg, salad and processing herbs from the garden.

We are in a very rustic setting with compost toilets, basic conditions and are completely off grid.

We are situated about a 15/20 mins walk from 2 nearby villages and there are buses to Lagos with it's beautiful beaches, marina, watersport activites and old cobblestone streets. We are also near to multiple sandy beaches with stunning headlands with amazing cliff walks. We have bikes which can be borrowed. We can offer a base for travellers to explore this fascinating and culturally active part of the most south westerly point of mainland Europe. The Portuguese culture is rich, warm and welcoming and there are lots of community events nearby like drumming circles, African dance, local markets. There is a large international community here due to a local Waldorf Steiner school and the fact that this is a year round tourist destination so most people speak English.
Everything on the land has been built from scratch over the last 2 years and all our equipment is relatively new. We want people to take good care of tools and equipment as if it was their own and be particularly mindful to leave a communal area as it has been found so that we all take responsibility for tidying up after ourselves.
