My name is Galuh, but people call me Atik. I am an author and I live in Jogja with Coen from The Netherlands. I was born near the Borobudur Temple. I run different projects in order to provide support to the students in my hometown and surrounding villages. I just finished writing a book, Nawung. I run a guesthouse in Jogja and I arrange package tours for tourists.
I run different projects in order to provide a better quality of life for the youth in Borobudur and nearby villages. One of the projects is teaching English to students from 9-12 years of age. I focus on speaking English. After the regular school classes I visit the students in their village. Sometimes I invite them in my gallery in Borobudur. My aim is to avoid the children being trapped in the circle of selling souvenirs, which is a profession that numbers in the thousands already. A good education provides a better perspective.
I am looking for a volunteer who can help me with teaching English conversation, because I am not able to do this more than once a week. You don't have to be a professional. Practising with speaking is the most important. I will not be around all the time, so I expect you to act independent. You can come alone, but the job is also perfect for couples. The students attend your class after they finished their school and they are very eager to learn. Most of the time the teaching takes place at the teacher's home. This family makes you feel at home and you can learn al lot of the Javanese culture.
Once you arrive in Borobudur we shall arrange transport to the village, which is about 5 km from Borobudur.
You can stay for free in my place in the gallery in Borobudur. There is a livingroom, kitchen, bed- and bathroom. You will provide your own meals. All equipment is available. But I will visit you several times during the week and I will bring things for breakfast and lunch.
The Borobudur Temple is the main attraction of Indonesia and is located in Java. It is surrounded by beautiful hills, where you can visit families in the villages who make handicrafts, tofu or tempe. In the countryside you can find volcanoes, mountains, caves and different temples. The nearby city of Jogja has a lot of interesting things to visit, like the Sultan's Palace, Prambanan Temple, potteries, silversmiths and the beach with the black sand dunes.
And of course the local people, they are very friendly, they all want to speak with you and help you wherever they can.
