Description
My name is Jen. I am originally from the UK but settled in Sumatra 8 years ago after meeting my husband, Bayu. I run an English language course aimed at children between the ages of 5 and 17. As a family, we also run a small homestay and a local tourism business. As a volunteer here, you would be staying in our family home in a close-knit community away from the general hustle and bustle of the city, while only being a quick 20 minutes from the center. Bayu is a local tour guide with years of experience and is always on hand to help you find the best hidden sights around the region or to help you plan a bigger experience.
Types of help and learning opportunities
TeachingHelp with Computers/ InternetCultural exchange and learning opportunities
While quickly modernizing, Padang has something distinctly traditional about it's general attitude. Here you can gain a real understanding of the importance of community and tradition.
Our home is situated in the middle of a close knit, but very welcoming, community. You will quickly feel like part of a big family and find yourself learning a huge amount about West Sumatran culture and hospitality. With limited English you will learn the basics of communicating in the local dialect and be able to build and develop meaningful friendships. Our hope, and experience, is that you will leave feeling like you have another home here in Padang.Projects involving children

Help
The English course has been running since February 2022 and has become very popular. Unfortunately, this has meant that my time has become quite stretched as I teach, do all of the lesson planning and help to run our homestay and tourism business, as well as being a wife and a mother.
I am in need of help! Ideally, I would like someone with design/lesson planning experience to help me to create workbooks and lesson plans behind the scenes as this is what needs the most attention, however I would also be very happy to welcome a fellow teacher.
The course runs Monday-Friday, however I would only require around 10 hours a week actual help and the rest of the time is your own.
Anyone looking to volunteer here must be open minded and happy to work with children.Languages spoken

You will be staying in our family home, in your own private bedroom, with use of the kitchen and communal areas of the house. We are very friendly, but also appreciate the need for privacy - we want you to feel at home in our home. You will need to provide your own food, and there are plenty of restaurants and shops within easy walking distance.
What else ...
West Sumatra has a lot to offer, with scenes of outstanding natural beauty close-by in every direction, you are sure to find plenty to occupy your free time.
Getting around the city is easy with local transport, and for any trips further afield we will be on hand to help you arrange everything.A little more information

Our Internet connection is fairly stable - I often teach online without issues, however it is important to remember that 'fairly stable' in Sumatra will not be the same as 'fairly stable' in a more developed country. If you regularly need to have online meetings etc. it might not be ideal.
