    Description

Congratulations on finding the one of the best Workaway sites in Hawaii!

Come live on our Ranch on the Big Island!

Looking for fun, healthy, and creative individuals who will fit well with the free-spirit vibe of the property. My beautiful (but slightly overgrown) small ranch in the Orchildland area of Puna, is currently home to chickens, Petunia Cuddles and the Pups (the dogs), and Sr. Fabuloso (World's Coolest Cat). It's a small homesteading property that features a 4 houses, a detached bathroom and a woodworking shed.

Plenty of opportunity for travelers to live in their own house while they get involved in local culture such as food, volcanoes national park, dance, beach life, yoga, ceremony, surfing, and music. I live alone, and could use a little help with basic home and garden projects.

My garden projects are can vary from simple to complex. Mostly you will be asked to clear space to increase the room for our gardens, help me build outdoor features such as a gazebo or other interesting community areas, clear brush, or build a nursery. I am especially interested in workawayers with carpentry skills as I am considering building an open air shelter to act as an outdoor gym/movie screen.

I am a 43 year old male that works as a counseling psychologist. I live alone, but enjoy hosting and occasionally the girlfriend stops by.

This experience is perfect for the traveler who is looking to spend some time in the morning helping on the land in exchange for accommodation, beauty, and independent adventure! Looking forward to seeing you soon!

This site is substance free. No alcohol or other drugs will be allowed on the property, and residents who are drunk, high, or otherwise impaired will be asked to leave.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Puna is a thriving and unique cultural experience, that has a feel somewhat like the parking lot of a Grateful Dead concert. Here on the windward side (eastern side) of the island there are many yoga retreats, beaches, and places for dance and visual arts. Local craftsmen offer opportunities to get involved in their projects and teachers can help refine music, carpentry, painting/visual art, dance, surfing, yoga, and all other types of skills. There is something for everyone out here in our warm and accepting community. We are close enough to easily hike out in Volcanoes National Park, head to Uncle Robert's Farmer's Market, head to Kahena or Issac Hale beach, check out the new warm ponds, or take day trips out to black sand or green sand beaches, over to Kona or up to Hawi.

    Help

I am asking for 15hr/week of Aloha Aina (service to the land), and an additional deep clean of your personal space on Sunday.

The land work will include clearing brush/ground cover and converting space into gardening space. There will be a lot of weeding, clearing paths, and yard maintenance. There are beautification projects that involve spreading gravel, garden maintenance, planting trees/flowers, trimming and caring for bamboo. You might be asked to work with tools such as a lawnmower, chainsaw, chop saw, table saw, weed wacker, flame thrower, or pressure washer. I will teach you how to use each of these before use. You may also be asked to help with simple animal care projects such as changing hay for the chickens. Woodworking/building skills are a plus. I could use some help, building steps, pouring cement, and other simple projects which are all scheduled for the property.

    *Carpentry skills are desired
    * There are times when 1 cook will be helpful.
*Motivated applicants will get preferential treatment
*This may be a stretch but any massage therapist that is willing to exchange massage for stay will be warmly welcomed!
*Auto Mechanic and Small Appliance Repair are often needed

Helping hours are 9am to 12pm Monday to Friday. You are asked to be ready to go at 9am (dressed for garden work, fed, and ready to be out of the house). During that 3 hour block you are expected to be off your phone, sober, and focused on the project. I will give direction about what projects to focus on during that 3 hour window. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy!

There is also a deep clean of your personal, your car, and your bathroom space on Sunday. This time will include cleaning up your space entirely (cleaning under things, actually moving the chair and sweeping underneath it, etc.) clean out the fridge, putting your clothes away, washing your floors, windows, patio etc., filling up water for the week, and taking the trash to the dump. This is all done to make sure that you and your cohort have a pleasant, safe, and clean place to live.

Note - I will not be working alongside you during your service hours. I will have other professional responsibilities and will be either working from home or at my job. I am looking for people to help take care of the land projects that I don't have the time/energy to get to. Thanks!

Workers that show up are expected to be sober, polite, and inclusive at all times on the property and in the car. This is the adventure site - not the party site. Our goal is to provide a safe, stable, and calm home for those who are chosen to come work on the ranch. We are focused on helping everyone have an energetic and adventurous time. No judgement to the party scene, but it's not what this site is about.

    Accommodation

You will live in your own guest house! There are 2 guest houses

Ohana House: This space has 2 queen size beds and can accommodate up to 4 people. The space is small but private, you sleep in a loft-style bed on a queen size mattress, and have your own closet and seating area. There is a kitchen area/working sink that is shared by all workawayers in this space.

Yoga Studio: 1 Bedroom yoga space with a king size bed. There are cooking accommodations in this space, but it does not have running water.

All spaces have plenty of hot water and electricity. You have a very nice private detached bathroom to use with a beautiful tub and indoor/outdoor shower. You will have a hot plate, fridge, and silverware for cooking and eating.

You will need to be prepared to purchase your own meals while you are here. I will not be providing meals during your stay.

For the most part our lives will be pretty separate, living like neighbors to each other. I respect your space while you're here and make sure to protect your independence and privacy.

I try to limit my length of stay for workawayers to 1-month. A typical stay begins on the first of the month and ends on the last day of the month. I am flexible on specific arrival dates. Massage therapists and experienced carpenters can usually negotiate longer stays. Shorter stays are fine too - just ask. Most people want to stick around for a while once they get here so I had to limit length of stay. I like to be able to offer this experience to a wide variety of travelers. You will not be disappointed with your living situation.

Because some people have asked - yes those are pictures of your space attached to this profile. Yes, that is your bathroom. Enjoy!

  • What else ...

    What else ...

The ranch is in the ideal spot for staying on the East Side of the island. I am 20 min. from Hilo, 20 minutes from Uncle Roberts and the Puna coastline, and just a quick drive to sites like, Shipman's beach, the Keaau Shopping Center, and Pahoa.

Internet access is limited at the Ranch. We have high speed internet available but the router may not be close to your living space.

Transportation will be an issue for anyone coming to the Big Island. Having a car or other access to transportation will be important if you plan to stay at the ranch. There should be a car available - but you will need to work out the details with us pre-arrival. Please understand that I will not be able to provide rides to my workaway guests.
