Hello! My name is Tristan, and I am a 22-year-old University student in the United States who is looking to expand my horizons and learn about the world outside of what school can teach me. I am a voracious reader and a passionate learner, yet I'm unconfident that school can teach me what I am in search of. For that reason, I've taken to traveling in hopes of meeting interesting people who can fill the holes that books and school simply cannot. I'm currently exploring Jordan,where my extended family originates. Prior to this trip, I travelled around France and went to University in Rennes before returning to the United States. During my time in France, I had the opportunity to work on several reconstruction and renovation projects as well as simple household work for workaway hosts that became dear friends to me. I truly believe in what this amazing platform has to offer. I am young, energetic, and motivated in every way to be of help to someone who is like-minded and as excited about life as I am. Heavy lifting and long work hours are not a problem if that is what you are in need of, but relaxed discussion and stories of your own adventures are deeply appreciated as well. I'm in the beginning stages of learning French, but open to the additional help of others. If you have anything to share, whether it be books, music, stories, work, places, people, or just time, I'd be honored to exchange it with you.

At 20 years old, I enjoy heavy physical labor but I deeply value conversation and learning from the experience of others. I have minimal building, plumbing, and electrical experience and I would like to learn gardening and homebuilding in the near future. I am quiet and often keep to myself but can also listen attentively and contribute to any style of conversation not out of obligation but genuine interest in other people. I've worked in both manual labor and sales building an array of skills that range from very hard work ethic to personable and charismatic communication. I enjoy a very structured routine and tend to be a (very) early riser, up before the sun and working until night. I also enjoy woodworking, metal smithing, and sculpting in my free time along with various physical activities such as weightlifting, hiking, and playing sports.

I love to play board games, sit and conversate, listen to stories, listen to music, watch movies, and take care of plants. I tend to be very minimal, owning only what I need but I also love to be festive at the holidays and explore!

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Help at our watermill up the ...)

I can't begin to find the words needed to describe what wonderful people Garry and Luci are but I will make my best attempt. Every so often, you come into contact with a person who not only improves those moments that you share with them but who improves your life for having been in it (even if only briefly), I was lucky enough to spend the… read more weekend with two of those people. Garry is an incredibly intelligent and deeply passionate man who exemplifies perfectly the work ethic, kindness, and talent that I hope to reach in my life. He is knowledgeable about a variety of topics and is happy to sit and share that knowledge in such a humble and articulate way. He is a joy to work beside and a gifted mentor capable of communicating ideas in a way that is easy to understand and leaves little chance of error (an incredibly valuable skill when working with another). He is a gracious host and ALWAYS makes sure that you are well cared for, well fed, and well heard.
As for Luci, she is among the most wonderful people I've met. She has such a benevolent nature about her and the kindest curiosity I have ever known. She is quick to listen and thoughtful with her every response which is a quality so rarely seen in the world today. She prepared fantastic meals during every part of the day and supplied the perfect company to enjoy them with and any person lucky enough to meet Luci will undoubtedly feel the same. It is truly unbelievable how self-aware and thoughtful both Luci and Garry are. During the time that I spent with them, my glass was never empty, my voice never unheard, and my time never wasted. I would happily have done tenfold the work in exchange for even a minute longer in their company.
Beyond all of these things, Gary and Luci live in the most astonishing home that I've been lucky enough to visit. They've added so much character to a place that is hard to imagine existing without them. Garry's fantastic designs and creative realizations of both his and Luci's brilliant ideas make for a paradise that is out of a fairytale. Luci's wonderful gardening skills complement the already idyllic postcard picture that they live in and leave you feeling unsatisfied being anywhere else in the world.
Finally, I've forgotten to actually "review" the work from my stay likely because it will be the least of what I remember from this beautiful adventure. Led by Garry, I helped to clear the logs that were obstructing the water gates that Luci and Garry manage at their water mill. I then moved the logs after Garry kindly cut them into manageable pieces. Afterward, we began backfilling the wall that serves as an extension to the phenomenal accommodation that Garry and Luci provide which is comfortable, private, and well-equipped. Finally, we topped the job off by filling in the blocks with concrete and topping the project with soil to level the plot. All the work aside, I feel beyond lucky to have come into contact with such amazing and kind people. I could not possibly recommend another host more than I would Garry and Luci. My sincerest thanks to you both and I can't wait to see you again!
