Hi all! I am just starting out my Workaway journey at the beginning of 2025. I left my old life back in the UK after doing various jobs in IT, accounting, admin, sales etc and want to explore other cultures and get to experience life on the road and elsewhere and not stuck on a computer screen any longer.

I want to align my way of living with my core values of creating a wholesome and natural envirnoment and to live a more holisitic experience. I am very excited to learn about yoga and mediation, to get to the depths of alternative ways of lviing and eco suatainability and to dig deeper into permaculture and ways of integrating a more offline and connected experience between people and nature and creating a vibrant and flourishing way of life.

I am deeply interested in exploring other cultures and getting to know people, as community is a big part of what I am about and beleive in helping others as much as possible. I am open to all kinds of tasks, from mundane cleaning and clearing up and sweeping insde and out, to cooking and helping in the garden or in the vineyard or on the farm or in a hostel. Anywhere that needs some help and is looking for someone like me (who is interested in people and nature) can find me waiting to jump up and be there ready to pitch in.

I am eager to join whoever I can wherever I can and look forward to seeing you all on my adventures :)

Updates:

Septmeber 2025 to present- working on a farm/guesthouse B&B in the lake district of Austria just outside of Salzburg. helping out with farm tasks i.e. weeding, planting, and harvesting fruits and vegetables and other manual labour tasks. also helping out with kitchen and washing dishes and serving and preparing food for guests and workers. also cleaning rooms and changing beds and helping out all over as needed

August 2025 to September 2025- working in a friendly hostel in Mostar, Bosnia and Hercegovina where I was part of a small team of volunteers and the owner himself. worked on reception and welcoming guests and arranging check-ins as well as promoting tours run by the hostel. also worked cleaning rooms and toilets and changing beds and doing the laundry. trained new volunteers that arrived and interacted with guests and was part of a tight knit community

May 2025 to July 2025- working in a backpackers hostel in Zadar, Croatia working as part of a small staff. work is being in charge of the hostel when on shift as completely alone and independent and heavily focused on reception duties and checking guests in and local recommendations/tours, as well as cleaning, sweeping, mopping changing bed, doing laundry and all the customer service related tasks

April 2025- living outside of Valencia, Spain in a rural off-grid dog rehabilitation centre and enjoying a community life with other young like minded people and doing various tasks on the the land like helping with fencing, pruning trees, making garden beds and raking land, planting vegetables in the garden and helping to install a water irrigation system for the farm as well as taking care of the dogs in daily tasks

March 2025- living rurally in Northern Spain in Cantabria just outside of Santander with a multicultural family. Helping to play with the children and teaching conversational English with the family and friends as well, and also gettinga full on cultural Spanish immersion

February 2025- lived off-grid in North Central Portugal for a month an learned valuable skills clearing the land of flammable material (broom, mimosa, eucalyptus, etc), dragging and cutting wood, tiling and mosaics, and playing and learning lots of board games:)

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Join our nature-loving family ...)

Leaving this feedback after having stayed with this amazing family for the month of March earlier this year

I have no words to describe how much staying with this incredible family has transformed my way of understanding. I had no concept that complete strangers could make feel like they have known me their whole lives just minutes after meeting… read more everyone. Starting from when Sofia picked me up an brought me back to their place, I was met with only warmth and kindness and sincerity and open hearts from the whole family .

Sofia and Edu and their vibrant and energetic kids Nellik and Korina are the definition of what it means to be a family.

Everyday ay their place brings a different perspective. Life is varied and its the perfect blend of being out in the charming Cantabrian countryside while also being close to the city of Santander if you want or need a more urban environment

Work is never the same day to day but it also never feels like work when it's helping to tend to the plants in the garden or chopping wood for the next season or helping mow the grass or feeding the ducks or saying hello to their donkey Roble. Helping Sofia in the kitchen or washing the dishes is just a part of family life, as is talking to their children in English and playing every board and card game imaginable. Work involves playing around outside or practicing katate or going on walks or learning or teaching about other cultures or just soaking up the sun in the lounge chair and appreciating good conversation . My time involved in these activities with the kids was some of the most rewarding I've had in my life and it would be so unfair to call it work as it was a pleasure and a privilege for me to get it interact with their children who are so so bright and fun and eager to be friendly and to be warm and sociable human beings. They have incredible futures ahead and i look forward to hearing about their development.

Sofia and Edu both taught me many things about Spanish culture and ways of life and we had many many interesting discussions on every topic imaginable and they are very easy going and approachable. They include you as part of their friendship group and within the first few days I already got to meet some of their friends who came to visit and who are part of a vibrant multicultural community. I got invited to their friends' houses and even to a birthday party for Edu's sister out in a a cabin in the woods and I never had so much fun in my life

They appreciate hard work and also like to play even harder and enjoy a true Latin/Mediterranean lifestyle and know what it means to have a sense of family and community and shared living. I met many of their family members and was always treated as someone who was a friend for life.

I appreciate the love the family gave to me and showed me and I wish them all the love in return for they are wonderful people and you won't ever regret that you met them and stayed with them for any amount of time.

Thanks again all of you and sending you best wishes and may our paths cross again in life at some point :)

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Wild swimming and off-grid ...)

Leaving this review a little late after staying at Hannah and Duncan's off-grid Quinta earlier this year for the month of February.

Words cannot begin to describe what an exceptional workaway this was and what am amazing experience I had with them as my first workaway experience

Hannah and Duncan from the minute you meet them are warm and… read more hospitable and always making sure you feel welcome a their place. They have a beautiful piece of land surrounded by rustic Portuguese scenery that's alive and wild and you feel truly inspired by the nature that surrounds you

They have made their place a nice little home after lots of hard work and planning over the years and if you want to have an authentic experience out in the Portuguese countryside this is the place to be.

I worked along with the other Workawayers mainly on clearing the land for the upcoming season but we had plenty of other tasks to do from taking down a sheep fence to transplanting bulbs in the garden to even more creative projects like mosaicing their stone wall out on the patio. I learned so much from them about general working the land and what it takes to live off grid

Waking up with the birds and going to bed after the sun sets (with fun games of Skyjo most evenings) really sets you up for living as nature intended . It's a nice rhythm to life over there and they work hard and play even harder. We got to have many laughs over various board games or friends coming to visit or going out to Sunday barbeques at Tabua market or going to some of the expat community run parties and dance nights. They certainly live life to the fullest.

Last but not least is the food. Everyone raves about it but it doesn't come close to expectations. It far exceeds them. Hannah is an expert level chef and serves up meals worthy of any 5 star establishment all while using the freshest ingredients and her own spark of creativity and carers to any tastes or preferences. She taught me how living a more conscious vegetarian style diet is very important for health and also the best dishes in the world can be had which just a few simple ingredients and her way of cooking is something I still reminisce about even months later.

Both Hannah na Duncan and easy going people and very interested in sharing their experiences in life and about permaculture and ways of non traditional living. They have made a nice home and are part of a vibrant community in central Portugal and are some of the kindest people I have met on my journey

I very much appreciated them giving me my first chance in my journey and they are without a doubt one o the best places to volunteer on Workaway. If you have any doubts, don't. They will alleviate any that you may have. Go visit them and volunteer and you won't regret it. It's going to be a memory for life. Mine certainly is for sure. Thanks again guys and best of luck and may our paths cross again sometime in the future :)
