A curious, open-minded, hard working Vietnamese girl ready to learn new cultures and explore this beautiful world.

Hello, I am Phuong Luu, originally from the historic and quirky city of Hanoi, Vietnam. I lived in the UK from 2015-2019. Now I'm back to Vietnam after 2 months in Indonesia (2023). I'm always up for an adventure to learn more about myself and the world.

Like many other fellow travelers, I think life is too short to conform to society expectations (securing a job, settling down, acquiring physical assets...) instead of doing things I truly love. So here are some of the things I love:

- Learning about art, history, literature, cultures.... and everything!! I read as much as I can, since I was very little. A Vietnamese author said you can travel the word through books- but now i can BOTH read and travel, how amazing is that! I love solo-travelling, getting lost in strange places and making friends with strangers and broadening my mind. I think this world is full of WOW factors, waiting to be experienced. (This is why I signed up for Workaway)

- Meeting and listening to people's stories: I truly think everyone has a story to tell and anyone can be an amazing teacher! In return I would like to tell my story too and hopefully that can be interesting for you!

- Writing blogs or movie reviews, drawing, salsa and bachata dancing, designing, taking photos, making films, making costumes.... are just a few of my creative hobbies.The list goes on as I try out something new. I'm currently getting into running and doing yoga too!

- Sharing trust, happiness and kindness: I often do volunteering, getting involved in local community, donating blood, or simply giving compliments to make someone's day. I love making people happy through simple kind acts. I think it is my ultimate life purpose- to love and to be loved! And the only way to be loved is through sharing and contributing to the world, no matter how little of significant it can be.

Was könntest du arbeiten?
- Hospitality: I've worked in F&B during Christmas, so I can handle hard work in peak seasons.

- Cooking: I enjoy cooking and I can make some pretty OK Vietnamese food from quite basic ingredients.

- Marketing: basic web design, video making, poster design, writing, planning social media, content writing, product strategy, brand design...you name it. It took me 4 years to earn a First-class degree in Advertising & Marketing, so it could be useful (hopefully)!

- Improv dancing and improv theatre: As a member of a Playback theatre team in Vietnam, I can teach some fun and engaging improvisation activities (ideal for day out, children, team-building...)

- Teaching English: Not my native tongue, but I spent a few years abroad and scored 8.0 IELTS. I simply enjoy learning and teaching. It can be fun to learn a new language with me.

- Meditation: I've been practicing meditation for 3 years, I would love to guide you with interesting meditation techniques.

- Drawing (or being drawn): As an amateur drawer, I love doing sketches and drawing portraits. Also have experience as a life-drawing model (in case you need help with art class)

Having an open mindset, I'm a very quick learner and not hesitate to do any job! . As long as we have mutual respect, I'm happy to give my best in return of your kindness.

vom Host (Make an impact with our ...) für Workawayer (Phuong)

Phuong came with her bubbly personality. I guess this really helps us and the interns (40 of them) get along very quickly from doing sports to city sightseeing together. This casual approach also helps us communicating the programs which Phuong get involved with.

Prior to her coming, Phuong and us already doing some correspondence related to the… read more accommodation to the programs that she would like to do here. Phuong also sent her activities draft in order to be aligned with our schedule and program. She was fast response and open to ideas and feedback that make things easier.

During Global Volunteers time here, they are accompanied by a buddy, the one who will facilitates their need and simply become their very first friend. It is safe to say with her open arms personality, interns are brave to approach and talk to Phuong. As Tino, her buddy, would say, "Phuong is such a wonderful and cheerful person. It feels great to have a friend to discuss many things with and exchange constructive suggestions with each other. Phuong is someone who enjoys trying new things, which Tino believes is one of their similarities. Phuong also has excellent social skills, which is one of her strengths. She taught interns that social skills need to be honed continuously, even if we are introverts. Tino and other interns also learned about how to recognize others and to collaborate effectively, taught and facilitated by Phuong through the 'Manual of Me' (some series of experiential learning planned by Phuong), which have been very beneficial for Tino and others current position at work.

We realize that 2,5 weeks might seem short for some, but Phuong managed to experience many things from doing several Reading Fair with kids, Storytelling, Experiential workshops "Manual of Me" for the youth (19-23 years old), as Chef to Cooking Vietnamese food for 40+ volunteers, brainstorming about Digital marketing and making a content out of it, to doing after work activity from doing aerobic in Car Free Day event, to karaoke and Bromo! And even to an intimate feedback session with out interns! Wow, Phuong really maintains her energy to make everyday meaningful. It feels like it's not a 2,5 week stay but maybe more due to it's quality and well spent.

Phuong stay in a Muslim family consists of a nuclear family with two sons, and a grandma. Phuong is able to adapt with them especially the grandma and the sons' mother who keeps on feeding her and also bought her some dress, very cute one! She even babysit and entertain the kids, safe to say she is an expected aunt everyone needs.

We wish Phuong and us will stay in touch after this moreover knowing her interest in making similar platform/institution in Vietnam, we could totally collaborate and work together! Good luck for the future and also with her study plan!

Vom Workawayer (Phuong) für Host (Make an impact with our ...)

My 2,5 weeks here was the PERFECT Workaway experience I could ever ask for. I came with an expectation to get involved with local community, to learn more about Indonesian culture and learn from programs. The team definitely had exceeded my expectations with their generosity and professionalism.

I was impressed at the first conversations with… read more Gading and team. They were very organising and transparent with communication. We had 2 online meetings where we together planned some activities that tailored to my needs and skills. This helped me to come up with a serie of Creative sessions, including drawing, writing and improv acting for the local volunteers at this stay (college students around 19- early 20s years old). During 2 months prior to my arrival, Gading was checking up on me regularly, making sure I'm well-prepared for my trip to Malang. Gading was super helpful and responsive, always tried his best to answer all of my queries, from SIM card to car arrangement. I felt taken care of even before I arrived.

My first few days settling in was easy, thanks to the wonderful welcome session and the detailed schedule the team had prepared for me. I was assigned to Tino, my buddy, who was extremely nice and attentive. He took me to and from work every day, supported me with my Creative Week series, explored the city with me and shared with me a lot of insight about the office and life as a student intern. I cannot thank Tino enough! And other local volunteers, including Alysa, Alviya, Kiki, Iko, Felisa,...were very lovely and eager to learn. We exchanged many conversations about culture, religion and their social work programs. I'm very inspired to empower young people and include them more in my (upcoming) project when I go back to Vietnam.

During my time here, I was involved in several collaborative projects, such as Reading Fair with children of many age (kindergarten, Year 1-2 and year 5-6); Cooking sessions where I could share Vietnamese food and learned to cook Indonesian food, visited an University, Digital Marketing brainstorming,.... I loved how reflection was required after every session and every week, which helped me to integrate my learning effectively.

Outside of office schedule, I got to do numerous fun activities with both the volunteers and the host family. From city sightseeing to Bromo mountain hiking, weekend car-free day, afterwork jogging, karaoke, relatives visiting in suburb area,...It's unbelievable how many awesome experiences I had in such a short time!

The host family was perfect: they welcomed me as one family member ''Auntie Phuong''. I felt immediately comfortable in their home. The grandma kept feeding me a lot of authentic, yummy food (i gained so much weight!!), the mum and dad shared with me a lot about Javanese culture and Islam, which I was curious about. My advice to future volunteer is: don't be afraid to ask question or request, they are very understanding and accommodating to your need.

I felt sad that I have to leave so soon! I have made so many friends and good memories here. It was a impactful learning experience for me. Thank you for everything!!!
