Hi,
My name is Kathleen and I am a zoology student living and studying in the UK.

As much as I love my studies, university is pretty demanding. But I manage to find the time to travel whenever the opportunity presents itself. My first ever trip (not through workaway), I travelled solo through the Scottish highlands for a week, it was an immersion of nature and culture and really showed me the kind of experiences I wish to cultivate in my life. It also really taught me that if you have the chance to do something that you really want to do, that is really calling to you - just do it.

My all time favorite places I have visited have been Granada, Molló and Glenfinnan. I also visited Namibia in 2024.

I am an avid reader and writer, and I have a strong affinity for animals, be that the wildlife in an area, or even a simple house cat! I have a dog of my own that I miss very much when I am away at university, and so I am most happy when I stay somewhere with animals around.

I have a strong past of animal care (mainly equine and farm animals), working as a coach and groom at a stables, and volunteering as a farmyard assistant at an non-profit urban farm. These experiences also allowed me to become resilient when it comes to hands-on or laborious work. I have also volunteered at a wildlife sanctuary in Namibia, which was an incredible experience that I love to talk about :)))

I am a loud football fan- thanks to my dad. We always watch games together and he shares my love for Barcelona. My family is very important to me, and they have really influenced my love for being around people and building high value relationships. I enjoy spending time with the younger children in my family, I often find the outlook they have very refreshing, and a welcome change from that of the people around me at university.

I'm happy with the simple life, but also always up to try new things. I often need to be outside in nature, but I also love a bustling, people-person life, especially through my time at university. I'm also extremely eager to learn new languages, I have very limited German and Spanish through family members - I truly believe language is a doorway to new opportunity.

Other than that, the thing that I truly seek in my life, is just to experience. I want to do as much as I can while I have the chance, I want to see as much as I can. I really believe that life is what you make it, and I hope to see as many places and connect with as many people as possible.

I am extremely interested in learning languages, primarily I am trying to learn Spanish and Japanese, but I have had some past experience with German. I believe that full immersion is one of the best ways to learn anything, so the same must be said about learning a language!

Was könntest du arbeiten?

Previous work in an urban farm, so I have worked closely with a range of farm animals, including large livestock (donkeys, goats and sheep), smaller animals (rabbits, ferrets, cats) and poultry (chickens, geese).

Also enjoyed learning about the volunteer run gardens on the farm and connecting with the local community. Helped with general maintenance of the farmyard, like fencing repairs, painting or weeding (not afraid to get my hands dirty!)

Experience in equine care and management, (unfortunately I haven't worked with horses or ridden in a while due to my studies :( ). My role also involved the maintenance of the grounds, tack room, reception and the staff areas.

I have admin and data analysis experience from my studies, and I actually really enjoy the administrative side of work, especially using softwares like R studio and Excel. I also love active field work, like data collection and sampling for research. I have experience in environmental surveying and multi-variate analyses, and also in wildlife camera trapping :D

I have a dog, and I am an experienced owner.

Was noch ...

I am a very active person, and I enjoy my daily meditation and movement. Keeping up with my daily routines really allows me to interact positively with every aspect of the day, and it’s something I am trying to get used to doing while travelling. I bring my yoga mat with me everywhere !!

I love birdwatching (although I am not the most knowledgeable) and love using iNaturalist, especially to learn about the wildlife in areas that I visit.

Barcelona FC has a very special place in my heart.

I read very often, and I love discussing books or getting recommendations. My favourite book at the moment is Deep River by Shusaku Endo. I also love to write.

I collect things - shells, rocks. I like to bring a small piece of where I travel home with me, be it something bought from a market, or a rock or shell from a place i visit. Mostly I collect postcards!

Honestly, I just love to be around animals and people - connecting is one of my favourite things to do.
