I'm Julia, from Wisconsin, USA, and I have been traveling this way since 2017. I have volunteered in parts of the US, Europe, and Asia doing everything from farming to cat care to social media to hostel help. I travel this way because I have a passion for immersing myself into new cultures.

I am passionate about photography and communication, sustainable gardening, music, culture, art, and travel!

Was könntest du arbeiten?

Farming - coffee, vegetables, medicinal herbs, fruit trees, landscaping, companion planting, permaculture, small animals. Volunteered in many countries and also have had my own micro medicinal herb farm and vegetable gardens. Through these experiences I feel confident from start to finish in farming - planting seeds, preparing the field, planting, irrigation, mulching, harvesting, processing, and retail. I can identify many medicinal plants and forage as much as I can. I have knowledge of permaculture and a degree in Sustainable Food and Nutrition.

Animal care - pet sitting cats, dogs, chickens. Volunteered at cat sanctuary feeding and cleaning.

Business - owned my own medicinal herb business and also managed a cooperative grocery store (staff management, customer service, human resources, social media/communications, product buying, working with small and large businesses to bring in products)
In addition to lots of farm volunteers, I also have four years of experience managing my own 1/8 acre of medicinal herbs and running my own medicinal herbs business.

Hospitality - volunteered at hostels and guest houses so have general housekeeping and customer service skills. Food tour guide in home city.

Social media/photography - Managed multiple social media accounts as volunteer, employee, and my own business. Can make reels or documentary style short films. Vom Workawayer () für Host (Cat sanctuary and non-profit ...)

I stayed with Curt and Linda for three weeks this past March. What a wonderful experience! But before I get to that, two things I think everyone who applies here needs to know:

-Cleaning cat litter is a daily task. Also, the cats poop in the home/on the furniture almost daily, and cleaning this will also be your job.
-The hosts is quite … read more conservative politically - for example, there were antivax and transphobic remarks made at the dinner table at times which was uncomfortable to me as a more liberal person.

These were my two biggest challenges in working here, so please consider if you can handle them before applying. If you can handle these things, you will have an amazing stay. Curt and Linda are both incredibly generous and knowledgeable people. I loved witnessing all the homestead-y things Curt does, from making delicious cheese and yogurt out of the milk from his cows, to growing mushrooms and vegetables. Linda was always kind and did her best to make me feel comfortable, and encouraged me to explore the island. And of course. she is so passionate about rescuing and caring for over 200 cats. It was heartwarming to see.

There is a little community here of renters and workawayers and it was so fun to have weekly dinners with the whole group. I would suggest renting a car, and splitting the cost with other workawayers if able. That is the best way to see the island. And with only 25hrs/week, there is plenty of time for exploring. Other than feeding/watering cats and cleaning their stations, the work consisted of landscaping/house projects like trimming hedges, weed whacking, and painting the house. Even though I had little experience with these things, it was easy to learn. If you notice a specific project that interests you, Curt and Linda are pretty open to letting you explore that. For example, I helped Linda schedule future workawayers and added to the herb garden.

I really liked the location of the sanctuary, it was on a more wet side of the island but about a 15min drive from beautiful beaches. The property itself is also beautiful - I had an amazing time harvesting and preserving the various fruit and herbs that were growing there. It was so fun to see all the cats living their best lives, and I was very tempted to take a few home. Overall, I'm very grateful for my time at the cat sanctuary and hope to visit again someday.
