Hi, I’m Hantze, 22 from Malaysia! I'm a scholarship Graphic Design degree at Middlesex University in London. While studying, I balanced 3 jobs: caring for 6+ families, volunteering at a welfare organisation, and running my design business. I've also lived as an Au Pair in the UK and looked after 2 kids. It was a busy time, but I’m grateful I could achieve First-Class Honours :-).

Those years shaped me into someone dependable, adaptable, and adventurous. I’m the kind of person who makes the most out of any situation, stays positive even on long days, and genuinely enjoys contributing wherever I can. I love becoming part of a community’s daily rhythm: embracing new cultures and ways of living with curiosity, warmth, and respect.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Help with our children and ...)

I don't know where to start, because my time with Sabrina, German, Noah and Giulia felt less like a Workaway stay and more like being temporarily adopted by an Italian-Argentinian family!

Before I arrived, Sabrina already treated me like a family member. She included me in all her plans, including her Dolomites family trip, all expenses paid for, … read more and brought me to try so many unique, regional Italian food that you won’t normally try as a tourist. But what’s amazing is not that I got a free trip - it’s that she was willing to invest her own time, money and plans into someone she had just met. She even moved her family plans back just so they could spend more time with me, and despite that, she still always encouraged me to go explore Italy whenever I wanted. I got to travel for more than a week in total, and she would stay up until midnight to help me plan all my trips even though she has to get up early for work. Not only that, she and her husband would arrange their schedules around mine so they could send me and pick me up at the train station so I didn’t need to wake up early to catch the bus. They would rather inconvenience themselves just to make me comfortable.

She was my tour guide, and shared the unfiltered, *real* stories of her incredible country. She showed me a side of Italy I never could have found as a tourist: little festivals that were even more full of life than the ones in my city, beaches, and nearby towns that are scattered with roman ruins! All the while sharing so much about the stories behind it, and also sharing stories of her life, out-of-the-ordinary people she’s met, and about her family history, including how they lived during WW2.

Living away from the city was so enchanting to see how how much life there was and how strong the sense of community and family bond is. Every Friday, the family would gather at their grandparents house for meals and bring me along too. Despite the language barrier with their extended families, everyone would put in effort to make me feel included. I remember Sabrina telling me that when they travelled to Argentina and saw all the incredible places there, she asked Noah what his favourite part was. He said, “family.” That says everything about how they've raised their children.

And of course, there was the food. Sabrina and German cooked many incredible meals for me, and taught me how to make tiramisu, focaccia, aglio olio, and panna cotta. Sabrina would even take the time to explain every single thing on a menu to me while everyone else waited to order. 🤣

My responsibility was teaching Noah and Giulia English through games and conversations, but it never felt like work. I loved spending time with them, getting to know their personalities and their wonderfully different minds.

The 2 of them stole my heart. Giulia welcomed me with a drawing of my favourite animal and even bought me a little gift (complete with wrapping paper) with her own pocket money. Noah would carry my luggage from the car to my room every time I came home from a trip without anyone asking him to. They would both try their absolute best to tell me stories in English even when I could see their brains buffering. 😂 They included me with their friends too, even though we could only communicate with hand gestures, and I was so much older than them. I loved biking with Giulia to look for nutrias, talking about anime with Noah, and playing board games together even though I always lose.

And then there are Pelu, the very hairy little Chewbacca, who doesn't believe anyone should be allowed to enter the toilet alone, and Neve, their adorable bunny. I miss them too.

Living in their beautiful home surrounded by vineyards, learning Italian, biking to nearby towns and churches, having weekly pizza-and-movie night picnics, supporting Argentina in the World Cup with their family, and simply being part of their everyday life are priceless experiences you cannot get anywhere else.

There was something so beautiful about the way they lived: simple, warm, and always together. I came to Italy hoping to experience a different way of life, and left with a whole new perspective on family, community and what it truly means to make someone feel like they belong. 💖

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Adventurous ...)

If you're reading this, run, don't walk, because I had the most exceptional 1.5 month stay I could have ever asked for.

Yes, Switzerland is breathtaking, and Caroline's home is the most beautiful place I've ever stayed. But that is not what made this experience so special. It was never the mountains or the house, It was them.

What I loved most … read more was that it never felt transactional. I didn't feel like I was completing tasks in exchange for a place to stay. I felt like I was part of their lives.

Caroline would go out of her way to support me even before we had met in person, and she continued to care for me in her special little ways. I couldn't drive, so she got me a bike even though she knew I'd only be there for a short while, simply because she wanted me to have the best experience possible. When I fell, she cleaned my wound and gave me “full body armour”😂. When I started riding again, she called to check if I was okay. She would sit with me at the dinner table until I finished eating (no matter how slow I was), just so I wouldn't feel left out. She included me in her hikes, family and friends, took me places, lent me whatever I needed, and gave me so much freedom because she wanted me to explore Switzerland, even though she had a million things to do. These are such simple things, but it says so much about the kind of person she is.

It's just Caroline being Caroline. Unconditionally generous, thoughtful, and always thinking about how to make someone else's experience a little better.

Not only that, to be living with the strongest woman I've ever met felt like I was attending a masterclass. Seeing her run up mountains for exercise, ski even in summer, climb with a broken finger, surf twice a day, all while being a mountain guide and raising Olivia on her own. Watching the way she lives her life has given me so much to admire and learn from, and I know I'll carry that with me forever.

Olivia is no less like her mother - her courage, bravery, determination, and independence goes way beyond her age. She is a high-achieving daredevil, and truly a diamond in the making - sometimes I forget she's just 14. She is like a little sister to me as well. I loved our bike rides to the lake, listening to her stories while giving her advice and guiding her. We were each other's photographers and she'd invite me to learn dancing with her. She made me feel like I had a friend here from the beginning.

My responsibilities were simple: walking Brownie, spending time with Olivia, helping around the house and occasionally cooking, and I had so much time to explore Switzerland. And Brownie is basically a human in a dog's body (intelligent, knows what I'm thinking), and I miss our walks through those postcard-perfect views way too much.

Caroline, thank you for trusting me with your home, Olivia, and Brownie. You made me feel cared for in ways you probably didn't even realise - if I listed them all down you'd fall asleep reading. So to sum it up, you made me feel like I have a second home, and that is something I'll always be grateful for. ❤️
