My interests include riding my bicycle real fast, rolling with my homies, making art, cooking, and general goodwill toward the environment. I can cook tasty treats, am an excellent speller, know a little about water ballet, am fairly proficient in most academic fields, can climb really tall things really fast. I like being loud with people. I like people I can be quiet with. I like people who give a damn and make things with their hands.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Help out on homestead in the ...)

My partner and I stayed with Janice and Paul (and Maizie and Farley!) for six weeks in the Fall of 2018. We were originally planning on staying with different hosts in the area but those rat finks cancelled on us as we were en route to their place. Frantic and desperate, we messaged Janice with a last-minute plea. She quickly called me and told us… read more to come right on over, despite the fact that her and Paul were embarking on a week-long vacation the next morning. When we arrived, she'd even waited up for us with a hot dinner. Both Jacob and I were so touched by her immense kindness that we put a lot of effort into honoring their place while they were gone and also took pleasure in tackling the (very reasonable) list of chores Janice left us for the week.

We’d originally planned on leaving after two weeks but ended up enjoying our time there so thoroughly that we stayed on for almost two months. Our work there was very project-oriented and therefore fairly autonomous, which I really appreciated. Janice and Paul gave us a list of tasks but also gave us the space and freedom to determine the best way to complete these projects. Because of this, we took a lot of pride and ownership in the work that we did there and worked very happily. Highlights included: shelling beans, building a proper final resting place for the contents of the poop bucket, cooking up a big pot of quince paste, building a luxurious west wing in the chicken coop, putting the garden to bed for the winter, making grape juice, and fixing up the outdoor shower.

When we weren’t working, we spent a lot of time hanging out with the pups, picking beautiful vegetables from the garden, going on long hikes in the woods behind the house, and spending a lot of time foraging for mushrooms (we got really into mushrooms while we were there!). Janice and Paul took us rafting and hiking and out for countless pints at the local meadery as well. They are both incredible company—really easy to be around and so smart and warm and funny and thoughtful. I felt as though we became really close during our time there and consider them both close friends—in fact, I just talked to Janice on the phone the other day. We also had the privilege of
tapping into their rich community while we were there. They are so well loved by their friends and so actively engaged. We had the opportunity to see Paul’s bluegrass band perform at a really sweet farm-to-table pizza restaurant and went over to Janice’s old friend’s beautiful rural property to press cider. An especially special treat was getting to spend time with their Guatemalan friends, who share a space in Janice’s big, beautiful garden. They came over with their daughters and made a big pot of soup and it was really nice to see how they filled up the kitchen with their laughter. Oh! And their neighbor Sam is awesome! He was the one that took us on our first mushroom forage and he’s such a wealth of information about the area.

I’d highly highly recommend coming to Janice and Paul’s little corner of Oregon. Their place is so special and I found my time there so relaxing and restorative. The cabin you’ll be staying in is really sweet and cozy (and very toasty in the winter with the heater on) and you’ll be surrounded by such wonderful and inspiring people. Philomath is tiny and sweet and the coastal range is absolutely beautiful. (Make sure you go to the Dizzy Hen in town for a cup of coffee and a handmade pastry and to Mary’s Peak for the moody and delicious Pacific Northwest scenery!)
