Beschreibung
First of all, let me introduce myself: I'm Eva Broeren, a 24-year old Dutch woman who would love to work with horses again this year as I am keen to improve my horsemanship and riding skills while being abroad. At home, I have three shetland ponies myself which I bred myself after getting one shetland pony as a reward for my hard work at a Shetland Pony breeding farm (where I've been helping out/working since I was only eleven years old!). I'm also currently training a young horse for its owner and have been riding horse for about fifteen years now. I finished my studies and as of this year I started working full time but that doesn't stop me from volunteering during my summer holiday.
Last summer, I was working as a guide in Iceland on multi-day tours on horseback where I fell in love with the combination of horsemanship and horse riding skills together with making sure the guests have the best time possible on their trip, next to the stunning nature and the incredible sense of freedom it gives you.
During my time in Iceland, I've gained experience guiding (multi-day) tours in Iceland as well as in herding. On the shorter tours, I was given the responsibility to guide these independently shortly after my arrival.
This wasn't my first horse- and guest-related working experience as I have been working at training stables, breeding stables as well as touristic horse businesses for several years now in different countries (for example Sweden, Ireland, Switzerland and Germany). This taught me a lot of horse and people skills, a great sense of responsibility, work ethics and the ability to adapt quickly to the circumstances. Naturally, I have references of all places I've worked at available if you are interested :)

Vom Workawayer (Eva) für Host (Horse enthusiasts welcome in ...)

I stayed with Marina from the 21st of July until the 21st of August this summer. What an experience! The place is really stunning; a… read more big house in a, what I would describe as, typically Irish style with a huge, lovely garden, a spacious horse pasture and a neat horse stable with paddocks. Everything is very clean and well organised. On top of that, Marina is a great cook and provides her (holiday) guests as well as her volunteers with delicious and nutritious meals.

There's only one horse breed at her place; the Paso Fino, a very special South-American horse breed which is famous for it's gait and brios (their very much pleasing character with amazing workethics). After a month of being around and working with the breed, it's safe to say that I fell in love with them (so much that, now I'm at home, I'm traveling seven hours every week to be around them for a day). Since the Paso Fino is very rare (especially in Europe), I took all opportunities to be around and learn from the breed. Marina has six mares and a stallion. The mares are all family and Marina bred them all herself (except for the oldest one who is the matriarch of her bloodline). As a starting breeder and rider myself, I loved to get to know her vision and knowledge on breeding and training.

The work you do as a volunteer is very well doable, especially if you're a horse person. The day starts with breakfast at eight and around 8.30 the morning routine starts. The morning routing includes feeding & watering the horses, cleaning the paddock(s) (depends if the horses are in) and the pasture and some small tasks like cleaning tack or fence painting. At twelve we normally had lunch and after you have plenty of leisure time which can be filled with relaxing, a nice trip (the surroundings are beautiful and very rich in history) or more horse stuff (like a riding lesson, groundwork or even some training with the young horses). In the evening you feed the horses again, see if they have enough water and check them all for the night. After that you're done for the day and ready to enjoy your dinner & more leisure time.

In principle, you help four hours a day for six days a week, but Marina is very flexible in planning the days off. I, myself, took two times two days of during my month stay to visit Dublin and Galway, which was a lot of fun since they're both very different but also very beautiful cities. She was happy to take me to and from the train station and gave me nice tips for visiting/doing on my trip.

Next to the permanent residents, the horses and a very sweet Jack Russell called Peggy, Marina welcomes holiday guests to her little Irish paradise to introduce them to the very special Paso Fino breed and show them a bit of the typical Irish lifestyle which, for example, includes whiskey tasting at eleven in the morning (if you like it of course) ;) , meeting a real Irish farmer and visiting the Cliffs of Moher and so on! As a volunteer, you're more than welcome to join Marina and her guests on the trips which is really great fun. I had the luck to be there with an amazing holiday guest and the three of us had sooooo much fun together (I still have a big smile on my face writing this ;) ).

Marina is a horse person, through and through, and is very knowledgeable about her breed, the Paso Fino. Not only is she an excellent horsewoman, but also very good with people. Since I was a newbie to the breed, she had to explain me everything and answer ALL of my questions and that's what she did with (seemingly) great pleasure ;) . Marina is a VERY FAIR host as she gives you exactly what you give to her! If you show that you're hardworking, responsible and enthusiastic, she will act on it and give you plenty of amazing opportunities, like riding lessons and beach riding! I even got the unique opportunity to join her as a groom to a competition with her stallion, Prestigio!

To conclude my review, I would like to say a really big thank you to Marina for all the knowledge, learning opportunities, understanding and patience and the good talks but above all, for the GREAT TIME AND FUN I had during my stay at your place!

Eva stayed with us for one month in June and July. She helped with everything on the horsecamp and was very good with the horses and all the other animals. It was absolutely great to have her as a help while breeding our stallion to mares coming to the farm as she was experienced in doing that.

Vom Workawayer (Eva) für Host (Small horse ranch in the ...)
