Hey there :)
My name is Nilüfer (which means lotus flower in Turkish) and I am a 24 year old female travel enthusiast.
I was born in Germany and have lived there most of my life, although originally my family and I are from Türkiye. In January 2026, I moved to Barcelona.
I am insanely curious when it comes to cultures and languages which is why I speak 4 languages (German, Turkish, English and Spanish) and am currently teaching myself French and Swahili. I work online as a freelance translator.
Currently I am volunteering in a hostel in Zanzibar, creating social media content to promote the hostel online. I am very happy to be here and to be improving my Swahili and immersing myself in the local culture. What I will be doing after my time in Tanzania is still open. I am hoping to get inspired about where I should go to next.
I'm very grateful for all the experiences I can make this way and I'm looking forward to the next one!

Having likeminded people in your life is one of the most important things. Most of the time, you gotta look for those people because they are spread all around the world. That's where languages come into play. I am very passionate about living a life close to nature. What I mean by that is that I love cooking and baking everything from scratch, I make my own skincare products and nurture my relationship with my creator, to name a few. I don't chase the materialistic luxuries of the world and seek peace in simply existing. If you are of similar nature, I'd love to meet you. I can teach English, German, Spanish and Turkish and would love to get some practice in Swahili. Looking forward to meeting you :D

My biggest skill is definitely languages. I grew up bilingual (German and Turkish) and started learning English when I was 5. A couple years ago I taught myself how to speak Spanish and became fluent by visiting a Spanish school in Guatemala, traveling through Mexico for 4 months and then moving to Barcelona.
I am currently on the same journey with French and Swahili, starting by myself with books at home and I would love to be able to practice speaking with native speakers.

Apart from that, I learned how to play the piano when I was 6 and fell in love with it and with music in general. It is a beautiful way of expressing your emotions when words are not enough sometimes.

I love playing volleyball, especially by the beach in the sun. The feeling of working together in a group and as a group to achieve a goal brings me a lot of joy.

When it comes to my interests apart from the above mentioned and my ambitions for my career, I am very passionate about organic interior design. I have already created projects on my computer and it is one of my life goals to build my dream home one day and become an interior designer.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Join our family run organic ...)

I stayed at this farm for the whole month of September in 2026. My experience at this farm was partly good, partly difficult. So I want to break it down into categories:

Arrival:
The host Emine offered to pick me up from Urla, which I appreciated. On my arrival day, I got to rest, and I started working the next day, which was nice (although I … read more have seen that other volunteers had to do 1-2 hours of work on their arrival day because they arrived early which I don't think is fair as they are tired from their trip). She also dropped me off at Urla on the day that I left.

Location:
There is nothing to do around the farm, but it is a 5 min walk away from the beach where you can swim, which is very nice. The next (and only) supermarket is a 45 min walk away from the farm and there is only one restaurant in the town which is also a 40 min walk away (they are close to each other). If you want to visit Cesme, Alacati, Urla or Izmir, you can take busses from the main road which is almost a one hour walk from the farm (close to the supermarket).

Accommodation:
I was staying in a private room with a double bed in the main house. The bed was very comfortable and I had a lot of space for all of my stuff. I shared the bathroom with another couple in the room next to me. We had hot water and wifi. It happened 2-3 times that electricity cut out for multiple hours and in that time we did not have water or wifi.

Tasks:
The tasks were true farming tasks: planting, picking tomatoes, stacking hay bales, lots of weeding, walking the dogs, feeding the horses and the donkey, picking up dog poop, watering etc. I did not mind that they were physically demanding and repetitive at times, but you have to know that it is quite demanding, in case it is not for you (she says so in her profile, therefore I knew what to expect). We worked 3 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. I liked that it was split because that way it wasn't too tiring. We started at 7 am when it was still hot, but once the mornings started to get colder mid-September, we switched to starting at 8am with breakfast and 8:45 am with working. We always worked exactly 5 hours a day and we had 2 off days a week that she decided for us: Tuesday and Friday. The entire day was scheduled, as in, the times we eat and work were set and they were very rigid. She did not appreciate it when we came even 5 minutes too early or too late.

Food:
On the days we worked. we had 3 meals a day, and on our off days, we had breakfast and dinner. The meals would be good, although we rarely had meat or eggs which is why they wouldn't be too filling. She cooked with a lot of vegetables from her garden. She has a water filter in the kitchen where we could fill up our water bottles.

Host:
This is where I was having difficulties. The host Emine unfortunately is not very kind. She always criticized everything we did and at times she even yelled at us when we didn't immediately understand the task she was explaining. She said things like "I have explained this so many times, how are you still not getting it?" or "I am paying these daily workers by the hour and they are sitting there doing nothing because you guys are not focused and working properly!". It is absolutely unacceptable to talk to us this way and this behavior has made me think many times to end my time there early because I did not come here to get yelled at and constantly be criticized. In the end, I decided to honor my commitment and stay the time that I said I would stay, but because of her attitude towards not only me but all of us volunteers, I will not be going back.

In general:
I came to this farm to learn about farming and I can say that I learned a lot and I experienced a real, authentic farm. Unfortunately, because of the hosts negative attitude and energy, it was very hard for me to enjoy my time there and I was constantly trying to focus on the good things and not let her attitude ruin my day. Even though there were things that I liked and appreciated about my time on this farm, I cannot recommend it because nobody wants to travel and volunteer and constantly be criticized and yelled at.
I still want to thank the host Emine for this experience and wish her all the best.
