Hey! - Welcome to our profile.

We're Josh and Ellie! Back in the UK you'd likely find us out and about exploring the mountains or enjoying a walk or a swim on the beach with our lovely boy Douglas the medium Labradoodle, who is also joining us on our adventures.
We are both keen travelers and have explored different parts of the world, we love meeting the people who live in the paces we're visiting, and seeing the area though their eyes! We love to be out in nature, a while ago we went on a 2mth road trip in Scotland & then packed up and left for a year adventure to Canada where we met some awesome people though workaway! We have since spent 3mths travelling Europe in the summer of 2024, where we made some amazing memories and again met some wonderful people though workaway, who we are lucky to call out friends!

Josh has worked in forestry as an arborist and construction for 13 years. He is also a qualified IRATA International level 3 industrial abseiler. Josh is very good at all things DIY and loves to apply himself to projects, including wood milling, house construction/building, mechanics and just an all round handy man! lol
Ellie is a registered veterinary nurse since 2018 and is a keen and confident horse rider and owner of two in the UK. Ellie also loves gardening and has lots of experience doing this and always trying to increase her knowledge. She also loves to surf and has recently purchased her own board! Ellie has learnt lots of DIY though Josh and using power tools safety & effectively! When I'm not working at the vets, you'd find me working my housekeeping job or helping Joshes parents get their B&B ready for their next guests.

We're both very handy and we can lend our hand to most tasks our hosts throw our way! We have done 4 workaways in the UK in the past and have since done 8 workaway.info in Canada! We had the time of our lives there!

We are very keen to live sustainable lifestyles and are always looking for alternative living ideas to apply to when we get/ build our own place.

We have set out some plans for our Scandinavia adventure which is starting Sunday 29th December! Very excited! We are lucky to have a very reliable CRV 4X4 with it's fully kitted out new winter tyres!

Hey, so I've (Josh) worked in both Forestry and Construction for 13 years, and then as a kid I worked on a neighbors farm in rural north west Scotland.
I have a wide variety of experience and skills in all things practical and hands on. This is also what I enjoy! I'll always choose to be busy working outside if I have the option! When I was in Canada I really expanded on my carpentry skills, I was making gates, styles, steps and also made a horse mounting block for our host. I also worked for a construction company and was able to improve my knowledge of building houses.I just really love immersing myself to building and solving any problems that come up during the build. I do also enjoy fixing machines or at least finding the route of the issue. These skills have all come from owing very old and run down cars in the past and wanting to fix the issue myself.

Hiya, so i'm (Ellie) a Registered veterinary nurse, so am well versed with all kinds of animals, and their care and it goes without saying that i'm not afraid to get stuck in and dirty! I have worked in referral veterinary hospitals to small country practices. I worked at the veterinary referral hospital that appears on TV which was owned by Noel Fitzpatrick (the super vet) . I have also just applied to university to study veterinary medicine next September (2025)!
On our most recent work away in Canada I was able to do home calls to people offering vet nurse services. I really loved the freedom of not being in a building for 9 hrs!
I have always loved gardening but recently I have had some gardening jobs where I have been able to increase my knowledge massively.
I have kept horses and dogs all my life.

As a couple we've worked on four workaways in the past in the UK and four in Canada. We have been so lucky with are hosts, we have been able to get involved in so many varying tasks from tree work, animal care, gardening, fencing and building, wood milling, gate building, RV work and much more!

I'm sure our previous hosts wouldn't hesitate in giving a reference as we've been asked to come back by them all!

Was noch ...
As far as hobbies are concerned Ellie is a keen horse rider and has been riding horses for as long as she can remember and is a confident rider. She used to do lots of show jumping but since her university course has enjoyed being a happy hacker/ trail rider. Ellie is also a dinghy sailor and enjoys catching waves on her surfboard.

She would LOVE to learn more on western riding.

We are both very interested in hiking, camping, survival and bush craft!

You would find Josh in his spare time chilling out in a hammock reading a book either about trees or bush craft!

We both love the idea of being as self sufficient as possible, having kept vegetable and fruit gardens as well as chickens and ducks in the past.

We are getting ready to set down some roots next year, but will always keep our eyes on the adventures that await us!

For about an hour I’ve been contemplating what I shall say about Ellie and Josh. But before I tell you, I want to expand on how and where I’m contemplating … I’m in my outside chilling out space that they created at the end of my barn ….. I’m lying on an outdoor sofa made of pallets that Ellie created to her own design. It’s warm, very warm but… read more I’m in the pleasant shade looking up at the two sail shades josh rigged up from the stone barn across to two attractive in keeping wooden columns he created and cemented in the ground . Behind me is a stone wall wot we built with a purpose made wooden shelf on it for mixing cocktails or whatever . To my right is a table they made from some old wood and a metal ring , it look awesome and also doubles as an excellent outdoor evening card table, for games that Ellie introduced to it. If I want a different view I will move to the hammock system that Josh rigged up. Or I’ll move to one of the chairs Ellie put together. When I make my mojito later (in about 10 minutes 😎), I will pick mint from the raised herb bed that Ellie saved from chicken destruction by creating an Andy Goldsworthy esque retaining wall around it . When we weren’t creating this excellent outdoor entertaining chilling space, Ellie and Josh helped me fix, deep clean, and revive aspects of my air bnb appartment which needed a bit of deep tlc. This was invaluable !! Josh embraces fixing anything … plumbing, even, and fixed things I’d thought were unfixable . I had to persuade them into days off and going out and about because they were happy and well into doing their individual projects for the grand plan of this ‘our’ chilling space. We then of course enjoyed many evenings in it, and a super party of my friends with Ellie’s amazing food and Josh’s cocktails , and cocktail experiments like the Pina Conana.
I really enjoyed our time together. We had fun and they are great company and funny and kind. I reckon my dog still misses their dog , Douglas … who was his swim, SUP, chase, peeing buddy .the dogs’ mutual friendship, and Ellie’s and Josh’s dog handling skills really improved my dogs confidence and temperament (a new rescue dog). Oh and I’ve also got a big awesome shade hanging light system in my appartment now thanks to Josh and his climbing roping skills and Ellie’s asthetic design eye. I did suggest that they just stay here forever but apparently they’ve got other adventures planned 😞🙃🤣. If they approach you you’ve hit the jackpot and you won’t want them to leave .
Anyhow, I’d say more but 10 minutes is up and this outside chilling experience needs a quick cool down in the outdoor shower they set up … the Ritz Spritz, mint gathering and a mojito to make. Cheers to you 3. From us 2. Xxx

We feel extremely lucky to have had an extended stay with Alison at her beautiful property with her lovely dog Annie and her two beautiful horses Bydee & Bobby! 😍🐴
Alison is such a wonderful, generous and friendly woman who we got to know very well during our… read more 4 mouth stay!! (the time just flew!) We shared many evenings of laughter, fun and pit fires! Alison is very considerate of your down time, as she too likes hers. Alison was always giving us amazing suggestions to go to and explore and lots of lovely hiking routes!
We both absolutely loved helping Alison, and the jobs were all so suited to what we love to do, our interests and abilities, that we didn't even feel like we were working! Alison is also very considerate in giving jobs you feel comfortable with and want to do.

Josh got very involved with helping Alison complete construction jobs around the property and therefore was able to self improve his carpentry skills. Steps, fences gates, mounting block, style and just general DIY inside & out! Also helped with some car mechanics too!
I was in complete heaven with the two horses and the lovely Annie dog! I got very much involved with horse care and loved every second of it. This ranged from morning & evening feeds, horse care, poo picking, riding/fitness and generally giving Alsion a well deserved break from the general day to day horse jobs, so she able to focus on more pressing projects like getting the round pen completed - which she did woooo!
I have horse knowledge but it's definitely not required here as Alison is a very knowledgeable horse owner and a great teacher. She would happily teach you about horse general care and their routine- so don't worry if this is something your not confident in!
I also helped out in the house organizing and cleaning which again I loved haha! I helped Josh clad the barn and I jumped at the chance to do the Vintage display on the barns and on the house! I also rubberized the RV roof. We also helped with Annie's walkies - she just loves them!

Alison is very relaxed about things and as long as your self motivated, willing and able you'll love it here!
We loved spending time with Alison sharing lots of great stories, games, watching films and generally just having a great time and a good old laugh!
Alison's home is so lovely, modern and comfortable, you feel right at home!!
We're so glad we met you Alison, and will always look back at our time on Gabriola with fond memories and joy! Miss you all so much!

So happy we left as such good friends- we shall stay in touch ❤️
