Looking for a summer filled with horse riding, campfires, cooking, friendships, dogs, chickens, new skills and dusting off old ones.

My name is Jessica and I am a Welsh-born woman. I have just finished my undergrad degree in psychology last week (May 2025) and the next academic pursuit is to head to grad school in September. Until then, I want to connect to the traveller in me and head out on an adventure of the summer. I currently work within hospitality as a manager at specific UK events (think the Grand National, Wimbledon, the Royal Ascot, rugby fixtures and stadium concerts) as well as working within a forensic psychiatric hospital. The hospitality pays the bills, the hospital is for the experience within a mental health facility.

I have had extensive experience with Workaway beginning back in 2014. I have also used a joint account with a former partner for travels around the United States in 2018. Previous experience through Workaway stays includes ranch work such as moving irrigation pipes, feeding animals, or fixing fences; taking guests on trail rides with ranch ponies; cooking for our guests, staff and monks at a Buddhist retreat; waitressing at a vegan cafe; looking after three children within an Italian family and having a language exchange; interior painting; basic gardening; household help with cleaning/AirB&B cleaning; housesitting; animal care with dogs and puppies.

I am in fairly good health with an interest to improve how much time I spend outdoors this summer. I eat everything but meat (I know, I know!) including fish, vegetables, rice, fruit, etc. Although I also am curious about eating meat raised on the land I'm working on. I don't smoke and I also don't drink -- but I still enjoy being fun, silly, laughing, being human and connecting with others.

I grew up as an only child, therefore naturally have the ability to get on with work alone. However, my twenties were spent travelling through various countries and engaging and living with people from differing cultures, therefore I have an ability to adapt to the flow of the group and team enabling efficient team work.

I can horse ride, cook and bake, organise, look after animals, take care of children, and create motivation in a team. I am great at following directions, initiating collaborative efforts, and leading when I need to. I am a self-starter and always aim to be positive, friendly and approachable.

I am an ideal candidate for almost any situation. I love animals, caring for others and looking after and teaching young children. I try to always be full of life and ideas to help inspire others. My ability to adapt in to any given environment has helped me greatly over the past couple of years and I have come to known so many people that have encourage, taught and built me in to the confident and independent person that I am today.

My time at Roy & Christine's was such an amazing couple of weeks this summer, I immediately felt at home with them in their lovely house. They both made sure I had everything I needed, including taking me shopping for groceries I would like, cooking vegetarian meals, giving me my own en-suite bedroom that always was cool during the hot summer… read more months, and teaching me about various new skills. I had my own room in the basement of the house with a jacuzzi bath, basin and toilet and two entrances that led either upstairs or outside giving that extra privacy. It was great to be in the house with them both, but to also have my own space when I needed it.

I loved my time learning how to install plasterboards with Roy, going out for drives to the store, or to see a friend. He had so much patience for me and was willing to help me learn no matter what it took. Christine gave me endless conversations and great company whether we worked on projects together or were just spending time together in the living room. Between them they offered me so much information on the local area, offering me maps on hiking trails nearby, taking me to various scenic areas and little Italian towns, and introduced me to their friends and neighbours like I was family. I hiked some wonderful trails during my stay, witnessed amazing scenery, tasted local goats cheese and ate beautiful fresh fruit all the time. Roy cooked up the best sweet & sour noodle dish I've ever had, and some really good homemade pizza breads! Christine is a wonderful baker and I was happy to be able to try her cakes.

The work I did never felt like work because of the company I was in - the dogs were a pleasure to take care of, and supervising their playtime was always a great way to start the mornings as the sun rose. Doing DIY with Roy and learning some skills with his sense of humour was always a highlight of my day! I learnt how to install plasterboards, use Stucco and understand the process of how goat milk yoghurt is made. Christine always kept me entertained if I was cleaning a room or cooking, chatting away to me. I miss them both, their humour and kindness towards one another and me. Thank you for the mid-morning espresso's, the coffee cake, Digestive's, curry's, pizza and watermelon! Plus the best peaches I've ever tasted.

Roy & Christine will not over work you, nor will they have you go hungry or feel tired. They take care of you as if you're their own family. I had such a great end to my summer with them and only wished I was able to stay longer. I hope to return to you again one day. Wishing you luck with future Workaway guests!

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Help to take care of dogs and ...)

This was my second time working alongside Sara at her lovely home on the Olympic Peninsula. I was first here May 2018 but enjoyed my time so much that I contacted Sara again to ask if I could come out for a second time. It is very easy to feel at home with Sara ensuring you have everything you need for a comfortable stay. I originally arrived… read more without much of a plan, thinking I'd stay for a month. I stayed for around nine weeks in total.

Sara asked me exactly what I ate/cooked before I arrived and provided me with food so I could prepare my own breakfast, lunch and dinner which I appreciated. The trailer home was a great place to stay. I was able to cook, connect to WiFi to watch Netflix, shower and sleep without any noise. Despite it being the colder months during my time there I was always warm, there was an abundance of duvet covers and throws and I also had use of the in-trailer furnace when the temperature dropped.

The best part was the dogs and puppies. I love animals, so caring for them is like just hanging out with them. I would wake in the morning and let the dogs out whilst preparing their breakfasts, refilling water bowls, clearing up the area if needed, laundering blankets/bedding for the dogs and then feeding the dogs. Throughout the day I could be assisting Sara bathing and grooming the dogs. I would often take one or two dogs for a walk in the neighborhood, or if the weather was damp we would play inside with toys. Some days when the dogs didn't need so much attention I mowed the lawn (on a sit-down mower! :D), raked fall leaves, cleaned out the puppy shed ready for new arrivals, hoovered and mopped Sara's house, or just had the dogs in my company as I folded blankets. Nothing was ever strenuous and exhausting. I really enjoyed spending so much time with the dogs, getting to know their personalities and what their favorite toys were.

It was a very pleasant experience and I would recommend Sara as a host, always. She is a great woman to know, she has a fun sense of humour and I always enjoyed being in her company. As a workawayer she took very good care of me. I couldn't have wished for a better experience. The location of her property was perfect, just two miles from the edge of town in a quiet little neighborhood. Whenever I walked the dogs neighbors always greeted me and chatted. The town itself has everything you will need - local shops, bigger supermarkets, gas stations, a library, a community center, an AMAZING taco truck (or two), restaurants, fast food stores. Even better is the location to head either to Olympia in half an hour or Seattle in less than two hours. You are close enough to the Olympic National Park and the Washington coastline that you will always find something to do on your day off. It's a perfect place for outdoor lovers and nature seekers.
