Living in Heidelberg, Germany
Beschreibung

We currently live in Heidelberg, Germany. When we travel we greatly enjoy staying in one country for as long as possible so we can integrate into the culture and fully appreciate what makes the place unique. We love to learn about how people live, think (philosophy) , and how they enjoy their life. We love being in nature and in or near communities. Hazel has done Workaway before in Colombia, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Iceland, and Guatemala, with those volunteer experiences, working in agriculture, waitress, hostel cleaner, babysitting, and expedition work. I have a separate Workaway profile but I dont use it right now. Vincent has done Workaway in South Korea and Japan working on gardening, building, and construction.
We plan to buy some land in the future and make our own homestead and we are hoping to get some experience tending to homes, community making, gardens and animals.

I, Hazel, have graduated College with a bachelor in arts and my focus was Architecture, Urban Design, sustainability, being hands-on/DIY! I have been very interested in sustainable practices, as well as farming, and generally just being outside. I have practiced some sustainable practices in my day to day life such as creating a vermicompost bin. I like to make soap out of glycerin, but I want to try with lye! I have built my Nomadic table. I want to re-use as much things as I can, one example is I am trying to use melted candle wax to create new candles instead of throwing it in the trash. I would love to learn more!

Summer 2018 I have spent at an Ecovillage in Sweden named Suderbyn! I have learned a lot about sustainability, gardening, and communal living! I have worked on various projects at this Ecovillage which were: Rocket-fire stoves, biogas production, sign making, permaculture gardening, communal living, building, spiritual course in Lithuania, sustainable living, and compost toilet!

Over the years i have helped my father with construction around the house. I helped create an attic and a room in the garage, I know my way around tools and feel comfortable. I've installed drywall and installed wooden planks for the floors in the attic. I would love to continue working and learning renovating and building.

I have also volunteered with the Flaming Lotus Girls doing metal casting and sauteing etc
I also took a class of welding in Washington :)

I love learning about people and their cultures! I am a very understanding and open person. I am a rugged person, I love to get down and dirty with the earth, I love doing manual labor, I am surprisingly strong for my stature.

I have studied Environmental Horticulture and Spring and Summer Plant Identification at the community college of San Francisco! I would love to learn more about herbalism, apothecary, usage of plants for nutrition or remedies and tinctures, ancestral herbalism, naturopathic, As well as wilderness survival and adventure! I like to make art using dried plants to create some kind of landscape!

I also know how to do basic sewing and have a desire to make my own clothing, I just need a machine and I am currently taking sewing and pattern lessons.

Vincent studies Physics and Mechanical Engineering in Germany and is a very outgoing, curious, and gentle person. We like to use Trusted Housesitters, couch surfing and Workaway while traveling . He loves to be in nature and a calm environment. He also likes to work with wood and has created art with wood at school and on his time off. He has also built a wooden bed frame, renovated a kitchen and a wooden tool box. Knows how to sew and knit by hand and also taking sewing and pattern lessons with me.

Vincent has also helped his dad build a room (walls, floor and ceiling). Vincent also had a backyard garden at his family's house and he worked on it and enjoyed learning. He also designed an E-trike during his studies in Germany. At home he grew tomatoes and other fruit bearing plants. Vincent will be finishing his certification for hunting in Germany May 2026.

Our dream is to buy a house and some property somewhere in Europe with the desire to have a homestead with hopefully community and local relationships.

Vom Workawayer für Host (Help renovate our home and ...)

We had a nice time staying at their farm. The parents were friendly and relaxed. Koichi is not a very serious and exact person. One culture clash was when they spoke to us based on our gender, which got annoying and tiring at the end of our stay. The nature is very pretty and lots of animal sounds. Every time anyone approached the house the dogs … read more would start barking uncontrollably and it is exhausting and confusing. Also they fed us every meal and always tried to arrange food for when we returned from to property. The breakfast is usually just cereal and white spongy bread with a small variation of jams and spreads; however they asked us if we needed more food variation. Eriko, the mother, cooks almost every meal and it was always yummy and usually Japanese and the food was always enough. I really appreciated that the property is far enough from the road so we didn't have to hear cars passing by. The toilet isn't outside, pe se, but what he means is that you can pee in nature since there isn't currently a toilet in the volunteer house. They were building a bathroom and kitchen in the volunteer’s house when we left. We can see the mountain from their property which was always sweet. They offered to drive us to nearby places like the Nieseko and Kutchan train station, the Makkari trailhead to climb Mt Yotei and a nearby Onsen. They also recommended places for us to go to and if it was too far we had to take the bus or hitchhike. The bus is not a very reliable transportation method. We learned the hard way that on some buses we had to reserve seats at least 2 hours ahead of time. We didn't know this piece of information… We left to Sapporo on a Monday and most things to do were closed, something that I feel they forgot to tell us. It can take between 2 and a half to 4 hours to get to Sapporo. It takes an hour and a half to walk to Niseko station, however there are places in between the property and the station, 12 minutes by car. The power in the volunteer house has to be activated and we can't really use it overnight since it is powered by solar panels. At some point it stopped working completely. The power in the main house however worked all the time. The internet was limited but turned on when needed. So we suggest you bring a power bank. Throughout our stay friends came over and we socialized and did stuff with them. At the end of our stay we went together with the family to a beach to go camping and do bbq. At the beach we met with other families (friends from Koichi) which was cool because we could interact with other Japanese and foreign people and learn more about their culture. Besides that there wasn't really a person to talk to. The children are kind but don't seem very interested in socializing. If you want to volunteer at the farm, be aware of the fact that you have to spend a lot of time by yourself. Luckily there was another volunteer with us the whole time we were there. All in all we had a nice time :)
