Hello, I am Hanna and I just recently started to travel the world! I prefere backpacking and camping as I love being in nature and also love meeting new people from all over the world. I am a workawayer because I think you truly see our world how it is by meeting the amazing locals and learn from them. I'm also very happy to share my knowledge and skills with you in exchange for new experience! :)

I love art, especially literature and dance. In summer I enjoy going to music festivals, riding my motorbike, reading books while chilling in my hammock or go on roadtrips, camping and do hiking. My friends and family mean a lot to me. I am from Cologne in Germany and a typical „rheinische Frohnatur“, how we call it ;) That means I’m always happy, communicative, love to meet new people, open hearted and open minded. I’m happy to give some of this spirit also to you while our cultural exchange!

Profession:
- I work as an account manager in an agency for advertising and marketing. This means I take care of the project management, budgeting and controlling, also preparing quotations and invoices. I am also part of the creative process and work closely with visual designers and IT experts.
- My greatest strengths I earned from that are organisational skills, the ability to work independently, a quick grasp of new concepts, a solution-oriented approach, a customer-focused mindset, professionalism, and the ability to keep a cool head.

Part-time jobs:
- During my time as a student I had many different jobs, including e.g. babysitting, working in cafés, working in bookshops and also helping out in a carpentry.
- Also experience in working with my biggest passion, my motorbike :) Licensed instructor for Drivers Safety Trainings. Allowed to give courses and group training up to 12 people on my own.

Workaway expericences:
- Farm work in Zimbabwe: feeding the animals, build an enclosure, collecting vegetables from the fields, support the family with daily tasks like cooking family meals and play with the kids.
- Building work in Zimbabwe: helped to build Chalets by building walls with clay, painting the walls on the inside and outside, adding final details and creative patterns on the walls.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Help on our new homestead and ...)

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Help with agriculture and ...)

I stayed at Sekiwas farm for about 1,5 weeks from Mid-January to end of January. It was my first workaway experience :)

Communicating with Sekiwa was quick and easy. At first, I wasn’t sure exactly what my travel dates would be, but Sekiwa was flexible and easy-going. He also helped me arrange transport from Masvingo to his farm. Please note:… read more this is a ride in a community taxi, which isn’t particularly comfortable. There are no fixed departure times and the journey time is unpredictable, and it took us about 4 hours. But that’s just how it is in Zimbabwe. It takes some getting used to, but you learn to love it.

At the farm, I shared a room in the main house with another female volunteer. The family got up early every day, but we volunteers were allowed to sleep in. There were 2–3 meals a day, which we ate together with the family. Sekiwa’s family is very welcoming, open-hearted and open-minded. They explain everything you need to know about the farm and daily life there.

My daily tasks included, amongst other things, feeding the pigs. To do this, we went to collect mangoes or grass from the fields. I also helped to build a cattle shed. Whilst we were working, Sekiwa liked to talk about life in the village and the culture of the Shona people, which is very interesting. Once, I went with his son to herd the cattle. As well as working, I also looked after the children now and then and played with them. We always had sadza for dinner, which is the traditional simbabwean dish.

In our free time, we went for walks around the village, visited the local school and chatted with the locals.

All in all, I was there for about a week and a half. I found my time on Sekiwa’s farm to be very rewarding. I was looking for a project where I could interact with locals and experience local life, and my stay with Sekiwa met this expectation 100 per cent. At the same time, I must say that it was a very challenging time for me, as I had never worked on a farm before and farm life in Zimbabwe cannot be compared to farm work in Europe. Perhaps I experienced a bit of culture shock at the start because the differences were simply so great. So I would recommend to all future volunteers that they take the time to settle in Zimbabwe at their own pace and get used to the country before heading out to the more rural areas.

All in all, my time at Sekiwa was a very valuable experience for me, during which I grew, got to know my limits and grew beyond them. I love the Shona people and their culture and am very grateful to have been a part of it!
