Beschreibung

Hi, I am Calen (pronouns: they/them). I am 23 years old and just completed my Bachelor in Environmental Science and Philosophy. I am very passionate about topics of anti-discrimination, sustainability, and environmental justice. For example, I have worked voluntarily in an anti-discrimination project for 3.5 years while I was studying. We conducted educational workshops in schools (pupils' age usually around 12-17) on queer experiences and realities of life to raise awareness and counteract still ongoing discrimination.

I am a thoughtful and curious person, always eager to learn new things and to get to know new people.
I like being active and outdoors, doing sports (I am doing athletics since 2008 and also did horse riding for 8 years), riding my bike, or just roaming around. I love being in nature, hiking, or just sitting somewhere and enjoying the moment.
I also enjoy quiet days, just reading, writing, maybe planning out my next Dungeons & Dragons session or playing board or card games (I would love to learn new games and share those I know with you!).

A friend of mine invited me to the US for her wedding and since I just finished my Bachelor's, I decided to stay and work in Canada for a couple of months (probably until the end of 2023 or beginning of 2024), because I did not want to take a long-distance flight for just a wedding. Admittedly, I still don't know a lot about Canada, but I am eager to see some parts of it!
This is not my first time backpacking (also not my first time doing Workaway) and I am happy to have the opportunity to do it again! I am excited to be able to be part of a person's or a family's life (even if it is only for some weeks) and to have many interesting conversations and exchange of experiences, thoughts, and skills.

Was könntest du arbeiten?

I have worked for quite some months in different kinds of plant nurseries: lilies, succulents, herbs, trees, and orchids.
I am a quick learner, very organised and reliable with an eye for work and detail. Also I am good at explaining and teaching (for example, I have done tutoring for pupils for 7 years now).

I have some experience with caring for animals: especially with horses, but also with pets. I partly grew up on a farm. Even though I don't have farming skills beyond clearing-out stables, feeding, and gardening (potting and planting plants, weeding, etc) yet, I know that I am used to farming environments and animals.

I sometimes do tasks of general maintenance (like painting, sewing, or helping to build wooden things) and I am used to managing my own household.

I am fluent in German and English, and learning some Spanish (probably around level A2).

Besides, I have a bachelor's degree in the field of sustainability and skills in team-management, acquiring funding for projects, and planning and conducting educational workshops.

Was noch ...

I am always up for watching a Sci-Fi or dystopian movie and then analyse it together. Or talk about books (my favourite book is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, but otherwise I love dystopian fiction).
If you are up for it, I would love to teach you Doppelkopf (a German card game) or even play a session of Dungeons & Dragons with you.
Also I am very excited to get to know Canadian flora and fauna, and maybe go for a swim.
Another plan of mine is to learn sign language. Preferably German sign language, but if you could teach me anything, that would be very wonderful!
