My name is Victoria Rose. I am an Australian Woman who started solo travel at 18 years old and continues to do so at 75 years old. Why? Because it offers freedom, freedom to choose where to go, how long to stay and what to do whilst you're in that place.

I may be 75 years old but I'm not obsolete.

75 years of learning, making mistakes then finding better ways, always curious and focusing on what matters in my life.

Which is why, as the author of an Amazon best-selling book 'How to Make The Rest of Your Life The Best of Your Life' I could write with lived experience. Such as the following:

23 years as a soldier in the Australian Army Reserve, rising to the rank of WO2

2019 taught CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH to 64 classes of Italian middle school students.

Australian Academy of Leadership: For two decades, I prepared and presented Leadership training to over 15,000 adult participants in workshops and seminars.

In 2018/2019, I backpacked solo through Europe, Turkey and Asia Pacific for 16 months to prove it's possible to travel and live overseas on an Australian Aged Pension ... mission accomplished :)

My Youtube channel @victoriarosetravel showcases all Live videos from each of the 10 countries.

Taking a break from Workaway, since April 2025 I've travelled Vietnam returning to Australia in May 2026.

Now I'm back :)

Previous feedback states "The work we did for Ela ended up being quite different to what was mentioned on the workaway website." and this was my experience too. Below is an excerpt from their listing on Workaway:

"First and foremost we need help learning the English language so we can better communicate with tourists and customers that we come… read more into contact with. You also will be needed to help with our online presence in English, such as Facebook and trip adviser.
Second, we will need help with odd jobs. This can include helping the women, setting up tourists with their rooms, maintenance, English translation of documents, and many many more small tasks around the site."

The work I did in the first week was covered under the "and many many more small tasks around the site." Kitchen Hand is not mentioned and was not mentioned on the video call with Ela's brother Florian.

It's not that I'm above Kitchen Hand work, oh no! Done that type of work for decades. But that's not why I travelled to Shkoder, Albania. I travelled to Shkoder Albania to do this: '"First and foremost we need help learning the English language so we can better communicate with tourists and customers that we come into contact with. You also will be needed to help with our online presence in English, such as Facebook and trip adviser."

After the first week of peeling, mopping, washing, chopping, dicing, slicing, drying and sweeping, I saw this was not just for the first week. This was how it would be for the whole month. I was not happy.

So I took action to change that and do what I travelled to Albania to do. But it was awkward.

Even so, the work I eventually did for them proved to be much more valuable to the Women's Centre.

For example, the restaurant address was wrong on Facebook, Google Maps and Trip Advisor ... corrected.

I upgraded the business page and created interesting posts about the restaurant. Also created a cooking video and a promotional video. Work needed to be done on their logo and the cover pic. I became a roving reporter taking photos and videos to highlight the social business aspect of the restaurant. This led to a massive increase in the pages views, comments, likes, shares and visits to the page. During my last week, I also noticed more customers through the door.

I asked Ela to change the Workaway listing to reflect the true nature of work required but notice this has not been done. My advice is to be very, very clear about what you agree you will be doing as a volunteer.

My accommodation in the Woman's Centre was excellent plus in a great central location.

The food in the restaurant is repetitive with the same offering for lunch and dinner, sometimes days in a row.
Luckily, food in Albania is cheap.

The President and staff at the Women's Centre are kind and caring and it was a joy to be a small part of their lives for a few weeks. Good luck.

Victoria taught English in a middle school in Italy. She did an Amazing job and had all the Teachers she helped out were extremely happy with her help and support.
