Are you interested in ceramic sculpture, or a ceramicist interested in exploring wild clay? Or would you like to work with lime and natural plasters? Come help me in France!

I’m Joanna. I originally trained as an architect, but spent many years in East Africa, Nepal, the US, working in crisis zones as a film maker. I’m also a ceramicist with an interest in wild clays and in animal sculpture. I am living in a lovely part of France, slowly restoring an old cottage.

The building is not a ruin but not yet quite habitable. As I am waiting for a roofer before progressing on the big building tasks, this summer I am focusing mostly on ceramics.

I have a large, dry studio and two modern electric kilns and I'll set up a raku kiln this summer. I've a varied collection of clays, both commercial and dug from streams and fields in the UK and France and a potential workshop for carpentry ready to set up.

In down time, you'd be welcome to use the studio for your own work (buying your own materials and contributing to firing costs). My studio might suit a ceramicist with experience wanting to develop a new line of work away from the distractions of home. I have two modern high firing electric kilns and the equipment to construct a raku kiln. I love experimenting and have worked in earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain using a wide variety of techniques from organic additives, paper clay, hand building, and slip casting. Please note that I don’t have a wheel for throwing.

Sincere apologies but this isn't a teaching environment, so no beginners please. I do need people already competent with clay and ceramics techniques if they are to be helpful in the studio, but I'm happy to share my knowledge, ideas, enthusiasm, space and equipment and learn from you too!

If you're interested in wild clay I have a collection to play with, and we could do some day trips to find some more. Wild clay slips are fun.

Regarding building, the project has involve working with lime, soft limestone, and traditional timber structures, but I'm mostly concentrating on the studio this year. I'm happy to share what I've learned so far and talk about earth building, clay plasters, and digital design though!

I'm looking for help in the ceramics studio, with a few building activities, and one outdoor task.

In the studio I’m looking for people with ceramics experience. Specifically:

Making test tiles using decorative techniques - slip, underglaze, and some non-commercial, more experimental glazework, and recording results.

Helping me to make bases for the animal sculpture. Lots of room for experimentation here both in wood and ceramic!

    In the building renovation:
Pointing the interior walls with lime mortar and stone sand from the local quarry - it's a lovely mix to work with and can become addictive :)

Helping to construct the first floor framework, and fitting tongue and groove floorboards (early summer).

Helping to construct a simple 'tiny house/cabin / field kitchen' from recycled wood. The base is made and there is experienced help around to learn from. This may be interesting for a group or a couple in May/June.

Outdoors: Clearing the courtyard of earth and fallen stonework, and dismantling the remains of a small stone outhouse. A good challenge for a group with wheelbarrow enthusiasm - beer provided!

Finally, anyone able to take charge of organising food and cooking in a 'field kitchen' environment whilst people are here will be especially welcome!

I'm really wanting to improve my French, so French speakers especially welcome! Previously we have been very successful in using Franglais :-) I'm happy to help with English, especially words used in building ....

    Unterkunft

At the moment I can accommodate one person or a couple in one or two bell tents with futons, plus anyone with a van or camper, or their own tent. Really sorry but no dogs - the field isn't fenced, and neither my neighbours nor the cat are big fans :-(

At the moment the accommodation is quite basic. There is electricity but the mains water connection is still in process so we use rain collection tanks. There is a basic field shower and dry loo. It’s pretty warm end May until early October here.

I'm mostly vegetarian but can cater for any kind of diet, prefer to source it locally with regard to good environmental practice.

This is a beautiful part of France and my local area is an environmental reserve, with a fascinating 'limestone pavement' ecosystem and birds, small animals, bats, owls. The Dronne river is full of fish and one of the cleanest in Europe; and I have a kayak. The area is great for cycling and there are day trips to the Dordogne vineyards or the caves at Lascaux. Paris is two hours away by train - a good day or weekend trip - likewise Bordeaux; the coast is about an hour’s drive.

Please note, the area is very rural and not big on ‘entertainments’.

For reasons of safety and liability, I do require you to have independent health/accident insurance if you're not a French national.
