*** PLEASE don't apply and say you are coming if you are not positive you will be here. We are a shelter with many animals who need care. Cancelling last minute puts us in a really tough position. Although you are volunteering, please be responsible and understand we rely on volunteers to care for our animals.***
Hi everyone, Im Madi & i'm an animal rescuer, I have been rescuing homeless cats & dogs for over 30 yrs. My work started in Belize where i fished kittens from plastic bags thrown in the water to drown and this led me to open the first cat sanctuary in Belize and central america. My work consists of total rehabilitation i.e, vaccinating & sterilizing to break the vicious cycle of more animals being born unwanted & adoption. However when i started prior to facebook, it was practically impossible to find homes on the small island as there were so many animals & not enough homes & most people did not like cats ie that is why they were thrown in the water.
I moved to Mexico a few years ago where i continue to do my rescue work as well as sterilization clinics to control animal population & their suffering, although its difficult to find local vets to assist. Most of the cats in my care are the senior cats still alive from our sanctuary & are 15 plus years, Sparky one of my 4 blind cats being the oldest. As the cats are older my work has shifted from a cat sanctuary to a senior home for cats.
I placed hundreds of animals in great homes overseas as there are many cats here & most people do not like cats.
The cats at the senior home grew older waiting for homes & were never adopted as this was prior to facebook, most have some type of medical problem but are still enjoying life and eat well. We are always lacking in funding and there are many things we will love to do to make life better for the animals as you will note if you volunteer, however we barely are making it to feed and care for them.
Please keep in mind that the cats and dogs at this sanctuary do not live the way your pet would live in your home, most cats share a room and a couple that cant get along are separated & this is because there are many of them to care for at the same time, because of this the stress level of cats is pretty high as cats by nature are loners so If you are a very sensitive person this position may not be right for you, as a few of them want more attention than others and cry for it and this can pull at your heart & may upset you as there are not enough hands to offer snuggels all day. We need persons who really love the animals and are strong physically, mentally and emotionally and can walk away at the end of your work without feeling sad or bad that you cannot do more and understand that this is how rescue work is and that unfortunately there are not enough homes for animals and some may not get adopted.
Our dogs at the rescue are homeless street-dogs and very very sweet and want lots of attention. Some are okay at walking, but some are still learning how to be on leash and have walking manners. We need people who can be firm and patient with them, preferably someone with experience that knows about the pack mentality and can control them as you will be walking them through the streets of Chetumal where you will run into other dogs and have to hold them back. At the end of your volunteer we think that you will find your experience rewarding as you will realize that your walks were not just leisurely walks, but that you helped us a lot by teaching them how to walk and feel confident and they will love you for that!
2 POSITIONS HELPING WITH THE CATS: FOR THIS POSITION YOU NEED TO BE GOOD AT CLEANING & ORGANIZING
The help with the kitties entails feeding them following the special diet requirements that some need twice a day at 7:30 am & 5:30pm, scrubbing water bowls and placing fresh water everyday, picking up bowls & washing them after each meal , sweeping and mopping each room everyday once a day, and cleaning litter boxes after each meal. There is also cuddling time and this we leave up to you to decide the time you want to do it.
Once weekly we replace the cardboard boxes and wash the litter boxes. There will be other cleaning tasks as needed.
We never have enough volunteers and we ask that volunteers be team playeers and work out a schedule between each other for someone to be at home always during the day perhaps for 1 hour or so each per day to keep an eye on them, as their are neighbors who do not like animals and may harm them if left unsupervise
2 POSITIONS HELPING WITH THE DOGS: WE NEED PEOPLE WITH INITIATIVE & WHO CAN CLEAN WELL .
In terms of our dogs, the daily routine requires them to be fed once a day at 5:00pm, their areas in the back & front must be swept everyday and washed with bleach & soap and scrubed with the broom once a week, poop must be picked up and pee & poop areas must be spot clean with bleach & soap and scrubed with the broom every day after its picked up, water buckets & bowls must be washed and replaced everyday and throughout the day replaced if it looks nasty or refill as sometimes they play and may knock it over, they also enjoy their little heads to be scratched & to take walks however there are street dogs or owners leave their dogs to go out and use the bathroom on their own so you must be attentive and look around to make sure before you go as well as not going too far as closer to the house its not as bad as if you go further away. Weekly tasks include bathing the dogs, washing the concrete doggie areas outside in the front and back. Other duties include watering the plants in the back every other day, sweeping inside the common volunteer areas as needed.
We need 2 people to care for our doggies:
The volunteer for the morning shift will start at 7am, the routine includes letting the dogs out a couple at a time to keep the noise down as we have to be considerate of our neighbors to pee/poop/drink water and once they do their thing we put them back in. You cannot walk all the dogs at once so the dogs you intend to walk first are taken out last and once you put all the dogs in you go off on your doggie walk with the first dogs. This needs to be done before the sun gets too hot for their paws. Volunteers for both shifts are required to be at the house to keep an eye on the dogs during your 5 hour shift in order to provide them with clean water after you washed their water buckets & bowl & check that they always have clean water, pick up poop & spot clean the poop & pee areas, sweep the doggie areas & dont forget give lots of snuggles:)*
The volunteer for the evening shift will start at 5:00pm. At this time you may walk the dogs that were not walked in the morning. If these dogs are the dogs that are in the back area you need to be careful because some do not get along with the ones in the front area, so you have to put the dogs in the front inside before you leave so you can exit & enter peacefully. Once you are done walking the dogs its feeding time & the dogs in the front area eat inside of their crates. We do this so we can tell who is eating well and who is not eating well in order to monitor any illnesses. Once the animals eat they are taken out the crates. At 8:30pm, its time-out for the dogs as the strays start coming around for food and dogs get very noisy so at this time we put the dogs in for an hour, while we put food out for the strays. At 9:30 dogs are let out one last time for bathroom break/drink water and at 10:00 is sleepy time and are put back in their crates for the night. Please note, volunteers for both shifts are required to be at the house to keep an eye on the dogs during their 5 hour shift in order to provide them with clean water after you washed their water buckets & bowl & check that they always have clean water, pick up poop & spot clean the poop & pee areas, sweep the doggie areas & dont forget give lots of snuggles:)*
****When no one is home, the dogs need to be in their crates so it's important that someone always be available to watch them between 12:00-5:00pm. This can be organized by the 4 volunteers in the house daily to ensure someone will be around.
