300Km south of Santiago came into existence just shy of two years ago. We are Dad (40) and Daughter (7), sometimes friends, neighbors and always a small family of lovely Volunteers living this lifestyle.

Our dream is to turn this mystically ultra-narrow but very long beauty of property into a regenerative, experimental, somewhat community like project, where dreams still can come true. In Summer we use the irrigation dam for daily swimming, in Winter for Wim Hofs Ice baths.

We do a lot of organic farming as an auto sustainable way of producing as much of our own food as possible (not yet quite as much as I would like to). Also producing some of it for other gourmet lovers in all of Chile, but on a very small scale.

We are also still spending and learning quite some time on bioconstruction, as our big House is still to be finished.

We have waterways, (in some winter way too much of it), mystical places all around, native forest, cold water in the mornings for Ice baths, swimming and warm water in the afternoon to wash off the sweat and refresh. Every moment here at Cataleya is just to Be, and there is a lot of it.

The plan is to be able to eat mostly products that have been grown here ecologically, without any agro-chemical inputs whatsoever. We will grow everything from garden crops to some cereals, an all-around farm in miniature and we are still in the middle of the process of planting a agricultural forest of fruits, nuts, herbs (Foodforest) etc. We do building constructions with straw bales and mud from 20m away, we distill Eucalyptus essential oils from tress 100m away, setting up irrigation systems, building basic infrastructure, building pathways, weeding, harvesting, processing food, etc.
We don´t work here, we live.

But of course as you might have guessed, I am not talking about Chilling.

We live this live style from sunrise to sunset. It can be very fun and sometime hard at the same time. The days are long and full of something new, everyday another thing to do. Days go by flying. There are always some challenges to master, something to repair, some fun Project to be finishes or started, some new construction to be build. That’s why we don´t count the hours here. At Cataleya you can’t differentiate between doing, eating, swimming, talking, excavating, weeding, building, yoga, workout or simply having to putting out some kind of fire (not literally). You´ll see. Once you unplug yourself from your Matrix, you´ll get to know the one I try to live here.

It’s a constant learning, improvising, persevering, overcoming your own limits, thriving, going forward and sometimes also backwards. Everyday a new invitation for another step in the personal growth. Especially because it shows us what it actually means to live of your own land, which many people have no clue.

This Project is still in its early pioneer phase. Every hard (living) working hand is needed and very welcome, but a high degree of independence and work motivation is required.
Please only consider volunteering with us, if you are aware that every beginning has its challenges and always brings a high degree of commitment with it!

As mentioned further up the lines, we actually don`t really consider this as work, we see it as life, that includes eating, cooking, swimming, learning, playing (when my daughter is here), maybe doing some routine for mind or body, always putting the most urgent maters first. I´m not going to lie, this feels like life itself, but you definitely will grow some muscles here.

So, life at Cataleya is interesting, different, hard, challenging, exhausting and fun all together. You will not just be sent to do something boring, you´ll be included 100% in the daily routine and also its surprises and challenges. This is Raw-Rural-Organic-Tough-Country-life at its finest. It´ll change the way you think about life, you´ll come across challenges, you´ll get some answers to your questions, even the once you never dared to ask, you´ll heal, it will be part of you long-term memory’s. And especially you´ll relearn to value the daily foods we so easily buy in the supermarkets.

The living standards are still basic so hosting will be in the main House until some volunteer spaces will be ready. Bring your own sleeping bag, so you´ll have enough cover in case of colder nights. Bring clothes, light and with long sleeves for the harsh and burning sun in summer. Also, a good headlamp, with rechargeable batteries, hopefully some tougher walking (working) shoes and maybe some flip flops or sandals for the house.

We try not to spend a lot of screentime here. We find it very sad, that these days people only get together in order to sit on their individual phones doing dopamine binching and doomsday scrolling in the virtually world. It’s just very counterproductive for everything that we try to build here and not at all realistic for a project like that. If you need a daily dopamine rush, you can opt for a long and healthy cold shower, or jump in the cold Irrigation canal or the small waterfall that I made.

Foodwise we can provide the basic foods that we ourselves are consuming like homemade sourdough bread, oak flakes and healthy foods we prepare ourselves for conservation (we generally avoid the use of industrial products as much as we can and won´t always have the same number of varieties than a modern supermarket). Should you have any special needs, there are a couple of possibilities:

Walk 1,5km to a very small shop, (but they really only have uninteresting stuff) or hitch hike (or call a private Uber for about 5 USD) 12km, where there are more smaller shops. Or you take from there the public transport to Linares City, (100.000 Habitants), where you can find every imaginary temptation and dive into the matrix for a while, just in case you would like to do so.

A lot of nice places, natural paradises, are to be explored even within the very property. So, if you have gotten until here reading and still want to come, bring a lot of positive energy and openness for a quite different lifestyle. Hopefully you´ll consider staying a minimum of 3 or 4 weeks. Exceptions because of some special trades can always be discussed beforehand. Basically, the idea is, to have you here as long as possible, so you´ll soon be able to take on some projects of your own and grow together with our vision.

We also welcome middle and long-term Volunteers, between 3 and 24 months. So, if you are looking for an exciting gap year, please talk to us.

Not yet, but hopefully soon, we might be able to rent a car for some tours, as public transport is scares. But even staying here is quite fun, as my daughter comes from Fridays to Sundays with a lot of energy for fun and parental challenges.

Our artificial Lagoon on the land is connected to the fresh mountain water so that we have our own swimming pool and water for irrigation. We live really basic and as ecologically as possible.

We use Compost Toilets, !!Only biodegradable shampoos please!! The shower is warmer during the day and colder during night. So far, we have basic electricity based on a smaller solar system. Basic Internet at certain times of day via cable, but do not use Wi-Fi or anything wireless and ask to please keep cellphones turned off as much as possible, especially in the house.

We would appreciate your stay here and like to welcome and get to know you for more than just a short impression - so stay as long as you wish. The days are full of hard living.

Organic methods: I'm by my first Trade Bio-dynamic Certified Farmer and Labour educationalist. We will not apply any kind of herbicides, pesticides or insecticides on our property, we will not use chemical fertilizers.

Certifications: Just getting started, with own property, so no use of agrochemicals whatsoever.

Current projects: Currently we are finishing the Main House with mud, straw and wood. Outside planting trees, setting up the irrigation, the gardens and cleaning trail paths in the forest. To establish an ecotourism, spot up on the hills we are still exploring the vast hikes. We are constructing everything with natural and local materials if available.

Whether you´ll have some kind of experience or not, you´ll learn, (depending of you stay) how it is, having your own place like this, how surviving of your own land feels, how to build anything with very simple materials, how to do anything in the garden, how to play Minecraft in the real world every day, how to disconnect from the distracting virtual world, how to be present.

Update of most urgent as of November

We have now started constructing additional cabins for a variety of purposes but especially to hold healing retreats. It is an ideal opportunity to learn how to use the mud and straw to construct walls.

At this time of the year we also require additional hands for weeding, we use a specifically designed tool for this. This work is open to shorter term volunteers who may be interesed to stay for a week or less.

The most welcome at this moment is a carpenter experienced in construction. We are dreaming of some furniture inside the house as well as projects outside like a mobile chicken house.

Another position is to take over the preparation of meals and take the responsibility of the green house. Most of the plants in the green house have been planted in the fields but we will be keeping some inside well into the winter. Right now the main ingrediets for cooking used are some delicious souces made from previous years crops, the last of the crops from last year like pumpkins and potatoes. Alsothere are now lots of different leaf salads in the fields and some first berries. We have plenty of rye that is used to bake sourdough bread, which is quiet popular especially with another treat that is made here, the pesto.

    • What we need is highly motivated people, with and without Trade Experience. But if I was to send a wish to the universe, as for medium to long term Volunteers. I would very much like to see here people with the following trades or experiences:

Farmer. Gardener, Electrician, Plumber, Builder, Carpenter, Solar and Energy Specialist, Survivalist in nature, Programmer, and people with experience in social media, Filming, Podcasting and Editing, but anyone keen to learn and contribute ist perfect.

    • Short-term Volunteers (3-8 weeks:
Volunteers will according to their background and previous experience participate in the daily routines and might be asked to take on small projects of their own. You´ll get into contact with bio-construction, anything inside and outside the house, garden greenhouse. We´ll be making some firewood, distilling eucalyptus essential oils and also participating in the food conservation processes. You might be introduced to managing smaller Power tools, like Drills, Jigsaw, Table circular saw, mechanical weeding. Also, my daughter might be quite keen to interact with you regularly.

    • Medium term Volunteers 2-6 months:
    All of the above.
Also, you might be asked to choose and lead a project or two, having short-term volunteers as your assistance, letting your own workflow and inspiration be turned into something that´ll improve Cataleya. If the right team finds itself, we might even consider to plan and construct with you a 3 km long zig zag Mountain-Hiking-Trail. Much is possible, if only you bring a strong work (living) ethic and love to create something that’ll stay forever.

    • Long term Volunteers 4-18 months:
Same as of the above. If You came here to spend some kind of a gap year here, You might even be able to build your own little house here. Also being able to count on someone for half a season or even more than a season, would mean, that you´ll definitely in charge of your own section here at Cataleya. Hopefully things like building a campground around the little stream, log cabins, several constructions, hiking trails and create beautiful spaces for someone to enjoy.

    • Live here:
If you are looking to move to South America and looking for a space to start, getting to know the Chilean way, with the possibility to actually build a life here at Cataleya long term, then just come here for a year and we´ll get to know each other better.

    Unterkunft

As everything is still in construction the living standard is basic so hosting will be in the family house as the volunteer space still needs to be finished. But we have a couple of nice beds for you in special, very unseen places like a hanging bed, where you can call it you little space. We provide blankets, but traveling with sleeping bags would make it way easier in case it gets cold.
Here I can provide the basic foods that we ourselves are consuming like homemade sourdough bread, oak and healthy food we prepared ourselves for conservation last season (we generally avoid the use of industrial products, like sugar and shit from Nestle and Co. But if something is missing for you there are possibilities to go with the bus to the half an hour distance city of Linares or Colbún or together in my car occasionally, when I do a “PlugIn the Matrix” day.

As we live as ecologically as possible, we are for example using a composting toilet and biodegradable shower lotions in order to not affect negatively the natural balance.
Please be aware that you´ll get much more in contact on a daily basis with earth, wood, straw and animals, like Cats, Dog and Ducks. A lot of what we harvest takes only 10 minutes from the field onto the plate.
Also, as long as we all live under the same roof, it would be very nice if the daily routines, including bedtimes would be respected, as everyone needs a good night of sleep, in order to be energy renewed the next morning and ready to rock the world again in this beautiful Paradise.
