Dear volunteer
We are an independent project specializing in herb farming and beekeeping, operating around a community of eco-projects developing in a big Alentejo farm.
For the 2015 season our main objectives will be planting our second bigger garden that will enable large-scale production of herbs, and keep developing our beekeeping and all kinds of products from the hive.
Our hosting period goes from March through October, with a minimum stay of 3 weeks. We will be giving priority to longer-term volunteers, who can stay up to 3 months. Because we have limited space and high demand for hosting, the occasional ‘no-shows’ are a loss both for us and other prospective volunteers, so please only contact if you are serious about visiting us.

We're still on an early stage of our project so there's always different types of work to be done, according to the climate and season: seeding, planting, weeding, tilling, propagating, harvesting and processing, seed collecting, beekeeping, irrigation and reservoir-building, and so on..
We have no special program for volunteers, you will be working and living our daily routine. During summer time, we normally work in shifts of early morning and late afternoon. You can expect strong sun and hot weather in Portugal at this time, so come prepared (hat, sunscreen, ...).

The accommodation is in a house in the nearby village less than a km from the farm. We have 2 shared rooms which can host up to 4 people at a time. We provide food for all meals but you should be prepared to cook for yourself. Sometimes we take part in group meals with other volunteers and projects in the area, where everyone can cook for everyone else.
Unless there is load to carry, we mostly ride bikes to move around the bigger farm. In the field we use compost toilets. The water for irrigation and shower comes from a well, and all of our field facilities are solar-powered.
Some essentials to bring with you: sleeping bag, good shoes, protection for both cold/wet and hot/dry climate condition, flashlight.
There are superb walks/cycling routes directly from the farm to the bigger Herdade and lots of nature to be discovered (we are happy to lend a bike).
