Hi there
My partner and I have 4 acres of land in Koah (4881) qld. It is up on the tablelands and 35 mins from Cairns.
It is rural and at the end of a 10km road, so very quiet and private. It is/was a blank canvas, when we first got it 2 years ago so we are at the point of planting gardens, regenerating the river banks, putting in the infrastructure and building an off-grid shipping container dwelling.
We both have experience in building tiny houses and natural structures such as earth-ships, hemp and mud brick houses. In regards to permaculture and syntropic farming we are reading books, attending courses, watching you-tube and learning as we go.
We are keen to share our knowledge and skills and look forward to learning from you too. There is always something to learn!
We are looking for energetic folk who have an interest and/or skills in off grid living, permaculture, gardening, landscaping and growing their own food.
The majority of the work will be outdoors, so lots of immersion in nature and living with the elements. There will be some indoor work too.
If you are not skilled in this work, please still apply, enthusiasm and creativity counts for a lot.
We work with open communication and honesty. If there is something we suggest you do that you don't feel comfortable with, then speak up and we will find you another job.
If you do have trade and building skills, and/or permaculture, food growing skills or natural building skills, we are definitely interested in hosting you. There is potential for paid work outside the exchange hours if you are interested.
We are both great cooks and love cooking for guests, but we have found in the past people often want to cook their own, so we work all that out as we go along. We will always supply staples such as grains, pastas, cereals, spices, tea and coffee, fruit, milk, bread, etc
If you prefer to supply and make your own food that is fine too, and naturally the hours of energy exchange can also be negotiated based on that.
If you have specific food requirements best you sort that out yourself.
So far we have set up on the land:
1 under cover camp kitchen ( with bbq and 1 gas burner stove and small camping fridge)
2 Outdoor (private) shower and bath
3 Indoor toilet
There are a number of accomodation options, bear with me as I explain:
1 - if you come with your own campervan or caravan etc that is great! We have lots of options for you.
2 - If you dint have your own accomm, you can stay in our campervan (2 people) or while we are int he dry season, we can also offer good tents and camping gear, if there is a few of you.
3 - I live 40 minutes away in a 2 bedroom town house where there is a spare room with a king single bed. There is another spare room that we can put a matress in.
There are are jobs to do at the Atherton property too, so that may suit you better.
Koah has Wi-Fi.
Atherton does not.
You can use my hotspot on my phone any time I am around.
We live in a great community with helpful fun neighbours. The last 'workawayers' we had here, ended up staying in the region for 5 months, as the local community offered them a lot of work and accomodation options.
This is a great place for you to:
Appreciate nature and basic but abundant living
Learn some skills that will empower you towards self sufficiency.
Hang out with friends, we have lots of room for others to visit and stay if they like.
Be creative and playful with your contributions
A base for discovering the region
We anticipate approx 22 hours a week and it can be in any arrangement that suits you. EG 2 x 11 hour days, or 4 x 5 hour days.
Smoking is fine as long as you are responsible with the waste and proximity to others.
A few drinks and a bit of music is fine too, but if you want to party, this is not your place.
Big skies day and night, plenty of fire wood.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
