We have just welcomed TWELVE new baby lambs onto the farm for the first time!! Tristan and I both work other jobs outside the farm (Tristan in construction and Jesse 3 days a week as a hairstylist). Tristan will be working 2-3 week contracts away from home, so I (Jesse) would love to find someone to help manage animal care, general help to keep the house clean, twice-daily animal feeding and care, LOTS of gardening (including weeding, fertilizing and managing irrigation in our vegetable garden and orchard), as well as potentially helping with other side projects and preparing for our medieval festival in September! I'm also starting our plant sprouts . If you want to really see what it's like to manage and live on a farm, this could be a fun opportunity to gain experience in starting a farm/homestead/permaculture project!

Ideally the person I'm looking for would be:
*compassionate and responsible when caring for animals (sheep, chickens, ducks, peafowl, horses, cats and our dog)
*relatively independent (able to take on the daily tasks caring for the animals, able to cook for yourself, able to entertain yourself while I'm at work)
*loves nature and tranquil springtime countryside (amazing hiking and natural parks and preserves all around, swimming weather, we have bikes and kayaks and access to the giant and beautiful Lac Simon... )
*you should be capable to clothe and protect yourself for working outside in Quebec weather. A change or two of clothes for working outside and for getting down in the dirt, WATER BOOTS highly recommended!! As well as supportive hiking or work boots. We have bug spray, bug nets, and sunscreen aplenty! You will definitely need a bathing suit!
*some basic general knowledge to manage a situation that may arrive when you're home and I'm at work (knowing the difference between a screw and a nail and what tool to use with each, basic general fitness to be able to put a harness on a horse and walk with him on a leash, which I will of course teach you how to do, but does require a bit of strength, and definitely not well suited to someone with, for example, very long precious fingernails)
*not afraid of animal excrement (it's a farm, managing animal waste is a part of ensuring our animals' well being and comes with the territory)
*someone looking for a rewarding, often physically demanding, but very low-stress and satisfying work with animals and making plants grow, and of course hanging out with some very snuggly sweet cats in our down time
*Getting your hands dirty and working hard digging, raking, weeding and more to maintain, grow and harvest amazing fresh veggies in our garden!
*Helping me with the big and physically demanding task of shearing all the sheep before the very hot summer weather hits!
*no major allergies to dogs, cats, hay, or dust (because on a farm we have a lot of all this!)
*We ask for a minimum stay of ONE MONTH! We are situated in a small rural village, so the time, effort, and gas costs to coordinate driving to the airport are not worth it for us for less than a 4 week stay. We will spend a LOT of time teaching and training you, and a week or two just simply isn't enough time to know the ins-and-outs!

Read on for more general info on Tristan and I :) Looking forward to meeting you! -Jesse
    ----------------------------------------

We are Tristan and Jesse, a young couple in the Pétite-Nation of Québec, with dreams of a Nordic style permaculture orchard, sheep and lamb production, with a side project in the works of "glamping/agrotourism." When the opportunity to buy and revive a historic farm came at the beginning of the pandemic, we scooped it up and chose to start the journey! Our project is still in the infant stages, with lots of renovation and repair to our historic barn and maintainting our 140 year old farmhouse. We have a pony and a Norwegian Fjord horse that we have started draft training to eventually replace the use of a tractor in the fields and for riding lessons, free range chickens, sheep breeding for lamb meat, maple syrup production, wild mushroom and medicinal plant foraging, as well as a huge personal garden in the form of veggies, fruits, herbs, and medicinal flowers and teas... plus our awesome cats and our dog, Merlyn!

We love to work with people who are:
    *motivated and positive!
    *animal and nature-loving
*willing to help with tasks around the house, like dishes, cleaning, and cooking
*a love and willingness to learn and ask questions!
*decent physical endurance/capacity (able to lift a bale of hay or 40-50 pound sack of animal feed)
*good sense of humor and positive attitude!

What we offer in exchange for your efforts of 20-30 flexible hours of work per week:
*Accommodation in a private room in our house
    *Wifi access
*Quality food (often organic/local/grown or raised ourselves)
*Learning on any subject we can teach you! Examples: carpentry, lactofermentation, pickling, & preserving food, local fauna, horse psychology & animal training, gardening and growing food, handling of various tools, horse riding, construction skills, forestry, organic and permaculture concepts... but also boardgames, chess, historical European martial arts (sword fighting/fencing!), art and sewing, leatherworking, traditional Québec music and culture, and more!
*Possibility of access to a car
    *Washing machine
*Unlimited fresh eggs from our henhouse!

    What we won't always provide:
Junk foods (like sweets, alcohol, soda, chips, etc)

Work tasks will include organic and permaculture agriculture work, caring for animals, helping us repair, maintain, and build Infrastructure around the farm, food and harvest conservation (dehydrating, jams & jellies, pickling, lactofermentation), forest and land management on our 73 acres. Because it's the two of us, we have a LOT of varied tasks and a full schedule of projects for the coming season! We would love to have motivated people who are willing to learn! If you have experience already that's awesome, and even if you have NO experience whatsoever, but are willing to learn, we are more than happy to teach you what we know! We speak mainly French and English on our farm, with the language in our region being almost exclusively French/Québecois.

We are the only farm in our village of Montpellier, Québec, situated in between gigantic lakes and gorgeous mountains. We currently are establishing all the infrastructure and doing all the repairs necessary, while developing our experience with permaculture and animal products and husbandry. We grow and raise a lot our own food, and love being able to share with family and friends. When we're not working we profit from the natural beauty in the area, swimming almost daily in the lakes and rivers in the area, hiking, playing and spending time with friends. We also love medieval combat and LARPing, fencing, roleplaying, costuming, etc. We are both LOVE reading, playing boardgames and movie nights, bonfires, going to see local music, meeting new people, good food & good stories!

***We are a proudly LGBTQ+ friendly farm and community!!*** We strive to treat everyone with respect and care, and we expect the same. We are very happy to live in a region that, although being composed of very small rural villages, is very open and accepting! We have a very diverse, educated, and funky social circle and our hope is to make everyone feel welcome, no matter what you look like or where you are in your life's journey.

Tristan- Nearly a decade of experience on organic farms, teaches competitive sword fighting, LOVES chess and other board and card games, military history, taught high school ethics and religion, participates in Viking reenactment and fighting, hitchhiked for many years all over Canada and other countries, horse rider and trainer, fiercely proud of his traditional Québec music and culture, longtime LARPer and animator for medieval summer camp, loves cooking and hates wasting food!

Jesse- Worked as a hairstylist/colorist for ~15 years, including 5 years in New York City, before relocating to start the farm and a family; artist and craftswoman including leatherworking, costuming, painting, hide tanning, digital art and design, loves board games, medieval/historical costuming and dress (especially corsetry!), LARPer, spearwoman and sword fighter, loves growing flowers and gardening, history and true crime podcasts, hiking and profiting from nature, playing the flute, craft beer and whiskey, horse riding and training, and developing and beautifying our farm project!

Our project is at the beginning of its growing phase; our orchard is newly planted and we have the beginnings of our sheep flock. We incorporated officially last summer and are really looking forward to seeing our project grow to the point where we can live solely on our production!

The richness of the land here is immense, and would be perfect for anyone looking to get closer to nature. Tristan is especially excited to share traditional Québec music, culture, and history. We can offer the opportunity to practice and improve your French or English, to treat yourself to an arcadian escape from bustling city life, to learn about diverse and sustainable agriculture, everything involved in diverse animal care and breeding, and to share in our culture of young farmers committed to improving the planet, contributing to biodiversity, protecting and nurturing native animal and insect populations through harmonious practices, and changing the definition of "traditional" agriculture.

We have two rooms in our house available. A single room, and a double room that is comfortable for a couple to share. We share all the food in the house, and cook together the majority of the time. Very often we make the meals for you, but there will be a lot of times when you will do your own cooking as well. We all share in dishes and cleaning, and generally expect you to clean up after yourself.

We are perfectly situated in an area rich in nature. We have forest and mountain on our land, and are right next to multiple lakes and rivers, and can offer access to kayaks and canoes. There are multiple parks in the area to experience excellent hiking, fishing, and gorgeous views. Tristan is especially excited to share traditional Québec music, culture, and history. We are also only 2 hours away from Montreal, 1.5 hours away from the Canadian capital, Ottawa, near the historic village of Montebello, and less than an hour from Mt. Tremblant and the picturesque Laurentides region.

In short, our area is incredibly rich in nature and land and would be perfect for anyone who appreciates outdoor activities of all kinds alongside wholesome, safe, small village and farm life.

Hier sind Haustiere in der Regel willkommen

We are open to almost any pet! However, be advised that we have large animals (horses), sheep, and lots of birds and small animals (chickens, peacock, dog and cats), and we do live on a public road, so your animal must be well behaved enough to NOT chase or kill our small animals and cats, NOT dig in the gardens, NOT snap at or chase our horses, and NOT play in the road! We accept zero liability for any injury to your animal, and you will be responsible if your animal kills or injures one of ours! Also, we expect you to manage your animal's waste (i.e. don't let your dog poop all over our yard, or if it does, clean up after it). Warnings aside, we love dogs and we are the proud owner of our first dog, Merlyn! He is an amazing petite-medium Shetland Sheepdog, well-trained, alarm dog (he let's us know whenever someone or something arrives on our land!). He gets along well with other dogs but we always take care in the acclimation phase when he meets a new dog. He's naturally more submissive, but he loves to play and has a lot of energy. I think a well behaved, well trained dog would have an awesome time here and would certainly be a welcome addition! We also have a lot of friends with dogs who visit regularly. If your dog or animal is accustomed to lots of other animals and people around, with no problems, then we would love to host you!
